Position Overview:

The organization seeks nominations and applications for a mission-oriented Vice President of Finance and Administration (VPFA) to help steward the growth and evolution of the organization. This is a new position as we are dividing the current Chief Operating Officer’s responsibilities in two to support a return to in-person convening and organizational growth. TheVPFA is supported by an on-site operations manager and a part-time bookkeeper and accounting firm.

Who Are We Looking For? The Vice President of Finance and Administration (VPFA) will report to the CEO and will join a passionate Management Team to work directly with the Board of Directors to ensure that the organization’s financial and administrative capabilities are aligned in service of the membership and mission.  In collaboration with the management team, the VPFA will play an integral role in executing the organization’s strategic plan as well as shape the organization’s culture as it looks to the future.

Leading Finance and Administration, the VPFA will:

Contribute to Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as a thought partner and advisor to the CEO and Management team, proactively raising strategic issues, making recommendations, and collaborating to support the continued evolution of the organization toward greater mission impact, engagement and efficiency.
  • Work with the Management Team to ensure all aspects of finance and administration are aligned and in service to the organization’s mission.
  • Model and support an organizational culture of belonging, applying inclusive leadership practices and internal equity standards.
  • Guide the Management Team in creating the operational three-year strategic plan; tied to performance and compensation negotiations.


Ensure Strong Financial Systems and Controls

  • Design and implement in-house financial systems that have been previously outsourced.
  • Ensure effective day-to day accounting for contracts, grants received, investments, payroll and general accounting matters.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of audits, tax returns and all financial filings required by law.
  • Provide effective policies, practices and tools to improve financial operations, including effective budgeting processes to align resources with organizational strategies and enable visibility into and effective management of disbursements and spending.
  • Monitor financial laws and regulations impacting non-profit membership organizations, maintain fiscal compliance and internal controls across all areas of responsibility and recommend processes and strategies to meet legal and policy requirements.

Support Organizational Governance

  • Participate in Board meetings; serve as the main liaison to the Board’s Finance and Audit Committees; and provide timely, useful and accurate financial and management reporting to support effective board governance and decision-making.
  • Support the Board, CEO and management colleagues in forecasting, analyzing, and understanding financial trends and impacts.
  • Implement and oversee organizational policies related to governance, organization and personnel.

Develop and Nurture a Strong, Collaborative Finance and Administrative Team

  • Manage, mentor and develop a strong integrated team, managing percentage of work allocation, problem resolution, performance evaluation and team dynamics. 
  • Promote a collaborative, high-performance culture that values open communication, continuous learning and quality improvements.
  • Oversees human resource processes, including coordination of annual performance reviews and compensation management.
  • Devise clear finance and administrative workplans, event planning and development goals. Instate accountability mechanisms.
  • Serve as a steady presence in the office and oversee day-to-day administration.

Location: New York City. We are co-located with a Foundation at 34th Street and Lexington Avenue. VPFA must be available weekdays with office hours from 9:00 am ET to 5:30 pm ET. Note that there will be longer hours in the month preceding the annual conference and shorter summer hours. This position is required to report to the office 4 days a week. It will not be a ‘virtual position’ nor one with flexible hours.

Compensation: Competitive to the New York City region with generous vacation and retirement benefits within the $150,000 - $160,000 range. Reports to CEO and collaborates closely with Management team including Managing Director, COO/ Development Officer, and Vice President of Programs.

Qualifications of ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will be committed to the organization’s mission. They must have strong strategic financial and business acumen, be a detail-oriented manager, skilled leader, and effective communicator. The ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:

  • Seven years progressive growth experience in non-profit financial management, including having led audits and annual budgeting processes.
  • Six years in HR management, leading a team, and compliances.
  • Extensive experience in the use of Quickbooks, Salesforce and Office 365 required.
  • An unwavering commitment to quality and excellence in strategic, organizational, fiscal and budget management.
  • Ability to translate a strategic plan and support management team by modeling and forecasting resources needed to achieve goals of the organization.
  • Knowledgeable in current and emerging policies, practices, trends, technologies, and information affecting the finance functions and organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex financial information and ideas into clear, concise, and compelling materials; ability to communicate financial matters clearly and effectively in support of the CEO, Board of Directors, staff and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to use financial analysis to generate, evaluate, and act on strategic options an opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment across the organization.
  • Experience managing staff in a small organization. This is a ‘roll up the sleeves’ appointment.
  • Experience with a client driven business model, highly prized.
  • Graduate degree in nonprofit management, small business, communications, or graduate experience equivalent, required.
