Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses throughout the United States.  The day was founded by American Express in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  This year’s Small Business Saturday will be celebrated on Nov. 28.

During last year's Small Business Saturday event, approximately $14.3 billion was spent at small independent businesses across the country.

“Consumers play a key role in helping small businesses become successful,” said Courtney Hornsby, WMWO Chamber of Commerce president.  “By shopping or dining at a small business, you are showing support for small businesses while reinvesting in the community you call home.”

Small businesses play an important role in the national and local economy.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 28 million small businesses that employ 55 million workers or about half of all private sector employees.

In Louisiana, it is estimated there are more than 424,000 small businesses across the state that employ nearly 900,000 people.
