(PIX11)– Mischa Barton is suing her mother, Muala Barton, claiming that she stole money to purchase a $7.8 million, 8 bedroom/11 bath home in Beverly Hills that the actress’ parents reside in, according to court papers.

“Nuala currently refuses to provide Barton with any of the funds she earned (and continues to earn in the form of residual payments) for her actin, modeling and endorsement services,” reads the complaint.

The former O.C. star’s lawyer, Alex Weingarten, also spoke out against Nuala, calling her a “greedy stage mother.”

“From the outset, Nuala positioned herself to siphon her daughter’s hard-earned money bu purportedly acting as her talent manager– a role for which Nuala had absolutely no experience or training,” Weingarten told People in a statement.

Do parents make good managers? Can they hurt careers? Datwon Thomas of VIBE magazine and Tina Douglas, Ashanti’s mother and manager talk about Barton’s situation.

Douglas has tips of her own that made her professional relationship with her superstar daughter flourish unlike in Barton’s situation.

Don’t dictate, communicate – I never pull the superiority card when I know
an issue can only be resolved by both of us.

Be a leader not a follower – In any circumstance never let anyone convince
you to do something. Make sure what ever happens it’s because you made the
decision and was not influenced by anyone.

Lose the battle but win the war – If something doesn’t go your way and you are
positive you are right don’t be surprised or upset when you don’t get what you want.
There is a reason that door closed. You lost that battle but will continue to fight
until you win the war…your ultimate goal.
