This trip I decided to concentrate more on the Upper Falls and, in particular, the railroad trestle that crosses over the Yantic River in between the two falls. My main reason for this was that the owner of the lens is also a railroad fanatic and I thought I might be able to get a picture or two that he would like. The lighting on Tuesday was none too good as it was very overcast and blah so when I edited the pictures, I decided that they all looked better in black & white. I hope you'll agree!
Finally, this is my favorite picture of the ones that I took of the Upper Falls and it looked best in black & white, too. At least I thought it did!
As far as the zoom lens went, the jury is still out on that one. I'm not so sure I did very well with it at all as most of these pictures (with the exception of the last one) were taken with my regular lens. Hmmmm ...
The black and white filter lends a certain textural quality to the photos. Makes the juxtaposition of the sleek iron/steel look smooth against the rough wood. Seriously.

ReplyDeleteDepending on the subject black and white is great.color is good also.just remember for the most part photos were taked in black and white.

I adore B&W and sepia! The tracks look fabulous! My favorite is the 3rd one.

I am not sure about the falls in black and white but I love the effect using it on the tracks.
ReplyDeleteLet me ask you a question, does the camera have a setting to shoot in b&w or do you do that in a photo program after the fact? I see some programs that offer it but have not seen anything that looks that good.

ReplyDeleteIt takes time to get used to a lens with a longer focal length. You also have to adjust for the lesser amount of light reaching the camera as a result of the length of the lens. I can rarely shoot a lower ISO than 400 with mine. Most time I use the flash to compensate. If you were using the lens on Auto, or without changing a few things it may be why you weren't satisfied. Also, why didn't you like the pics? Blurry? Not zoomed enough, etc. That would help you decide if its the lens, or just that you aren't use to it. Hope that helps, don't give up. Its a great lens to have in your gear bag.

I love the picture of the tracks. I like black and white. The kids had a professional take pic's of HM and they are B and W or maybe sepia and I love them..
