Multiple Texas school districts were reporting damage after severe storms moved over the central part of the state on Halloween. The storms produced heavy rain, multiple tornados, and flooding across the region, and water stood as high as a foot in some areas. Some bayous were also reported to be overflowing with high waters. The Houston Chronicle reports that the following schools sustained significant damage:
- Jennie Reid Elementary School in La Porte. Jennie Reid Elementary suffered extensive roof and water damage as the drains on the roof were broken in the storm.
- La Porte High School. The damages at La Porte High were most significant in its career and technical sections, and the Sixth Grade Campus was without power because its feed was destroyed by the storm.
- Palm Elementary in East Austin. Twenty-three classrooms at Palm Elementary were damaged by flooding, with four to five inches of water in some sections. School officials report that it may be weeks before some areas of the campus are again open to students and staff. Fortunately, the school will be able to continue classes in parts of the campus not harmed in the storm.
- Green Elementary School in the Clear Creek district. The school reported damage due to flood waters and was closed on Monday.
The La Porte school district closed all schools on the Monday following the storm, but staff members were coming in to help with cleanup efforts. Other districts canceled classes or closed individual schools on an as-needed basis.
Damage Not Limited to School Properties in Central Texas
Along with area schools, at least 70 homes in the La Porte region suffered damage from the storm system. The Pasadena Citizen reports that a total of six tornadoes touched down across Texas, including the one that left damage in La Porte. At least one industrial business lost a warehouse in the storm, and at least one building collapse was reported. Some houses lost their roofs, and blown debris was widespread. Ninety water rescues were reported in Houston.
