What will product design look like in 20 years? originally appeared on Quora - the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Jonathan Badeen, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Tinder, on Quora:

I think the game of product design will have totally changed. We’re seeing a shift toward augmented reality with Apple’s recently announced ARKit and Snapchat’s augmented reality filters, and this is set to continue. I think we’ll begin to see more and more programs that take AR capabilities into account, and product design will mirror that. The interesting thing about designing for augmented reality is that you can’t really build an environment into a device - a phone, for example. Instead, the design has to take into account a user’s specific environment and all the variations that the app could layer on top of it. It will be really interesting to see what comes out of the upcoming generations of product designers - this is only the beginning.

Where AR is concerned in general, it's going to be a lot about bringing things to the user instead of the user going to them. That's not the case with current AR. Right now, apps and their push notifications are fairly separate things. I think one of the best use cases for AR in the future will be push notifications that bring relevant information to you in far more engaging ways - directly integrating into your environment and pointing out those things around you as opposed to events going on elsewhere. Imagine walking into a shopping mall and being offered up a list of products that are both on sale and relevant to your specific interests. Or getting the bus home on a Friday evening and being presented with a personalized line-up of events (and date suggestions!) taking place in your city that weekend

For Tinder specifically, we’ll continue innovate while responding to user needs and feedback.
