SAURAN
Southern African Universities Radiometric Network
- High accuracy solar radiometric data for research, development and general use -
The SAURAN network currently consists of 14 solar measurement stations spread out over Southern Africa, with more planned to be added in the near future. The latest additions to the network are the stations at the University of Gabarone and the University of Venda, now providing researchers high accuracy solar data in these regions.
ABOUT THE SAURAN NETWORK
The Southern African Universities Radiometric Network (SAURAN) is an initiative of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University and the Group for Solar Energy Thermodynamics (GSET) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. SAURAN makes high-resolution, highly accurate, ground-based solar radiometric data available from stations located across the Southern African region, including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Reunion Island.

DATA SETS
Solar irradiation data is available at 1-minute, hourly and daily time-averaged intervals for most stations and includes:
  • Direct normal irradiance (DNI)
  • Global horizontal irradiance (GHI)
  • Diffuce horizontal (DHI)
  • Air temperatures
  • Wind speeds
  • UV
