Saguaro's Byron Murphy receives U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey

Byron Murphy's childhood dream came true Friday when he was presented his U.S. Army All-American Bowl football jersey at Scottsdale Saguaro.

"I used to see videos of it when I was little, and thought how incredible that would be to some day be one of them," said Murphy, a senior wide receiver/cornerback, who leads Saguaro into the Division II playoffs Friday night at home against Glendale Apollo in the first round. "It's crazy. I've always dreamed of playing in this game."

It appears Murphy will be the last of the state's 2016 Big 3 to make public his college commitment. He said he likely will wait until the Jan. 9 All-American game at the Alamodome in San Antonio on NBC to announce his college.

Chandler wide receiver N'Keal Harry announced last Monday that he will be playing football at Arizona State.

Chandler receiver/running back Chase Lucas will make his college announcement Monday morning, when he will receive his U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey during a ceremony at the school.

Murphy, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, said his football career turned around after his sophomore year when he transferred from Tempe Marcos de Niza.

With college coaches coming through Saguaro to see receiver Christian Kirk, Murphy's exposure took off and scholarships poured in. He has narrowed his list to three: ASU, Washington and Texas A&M. He makes his last official recruiting visit to ASU on Nov. 21 when the Sun Devils play the University of Arizona.

He has 58 catches for 1,266 yards and 15 touchdowns in nine games this season. He made All-Arizona last season at receiver, after catching 65 passes for 1,348 yards and 13 TDs. Kirk was the Arizona Player of the Year last season, as the Sabercats went 14-0 and captured their second consecutive Division III championship.

This season on defense, Murphy has 31 tackles and four interceptions, returning one 102 yards for a score. He has also caused two fumbles.

He is open to playing both sides of the ball in college.

"It's crazy how far I've come from my freshman year," Murphy said. "I never thought this would be possible. Then, to have the U.S. Army come in and invite me to play in their game, it's exciting."
