Jaws! (The ultimate episode)

Jaws! (The ultimate episode)

Back in March, we sat down to record a bumper bonus episode to celebrate the end of WDAWKT as a regular podcast. After we'd recorded, we went out for a few drinks, a nice meal, and a few more drinks, and in the glow of companionship and the fog of the following hangover, we rather forgot actually to edit, master or release the episode. So here you have it. Six months late(r) than planned, the final WDAWKT - Jaws!

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is an indispensable companion to all those who are keen to make sense of life in an infinitely complex and confusing Universe, for though it cannot hope to be useful or informative on all matters, it does at least make the reassuring claim, that where it is inaccurate it is at least definitively inaccurate. In cases of major discrepancy it's always reality that's got it wrong."

Don't panic! We're not doing the movie, or the TV show, or the books, or even most of the radio show. This episode is all about the OG HHG, the first ever part of the radio show that spawned all of the above. So grab your towel, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Dick Tracy

Dick Tracy

Warning: Contains 150% of your daily recommended allowance of Dick jokes.

We're not sure what led us down the rabbit hole that ended at Warren Beatty's 1990 live action interpretation of the classic detective comic strip. We're even less sure if we like the film or not. One thing is for certain, it's got "Style". With an all star cast (mostly unrecognisable) an award winning soundtrack (full of songs only a mother could love) and a colour palette of 7 (count em), and some of the worst matte work in cinema history, it's certainly of an era. Is it good? Well you'll just have to listen to find out*

* Unless of course you've seen the film in which case you already know the answer and we share your pain.

Sneakers

Sneakers

Part two of our hacker, tech, double bill is a different beast, less 00's cyberjizz and more grounded. With an all-star ensemble (seriously, check out the cast!) Sneakers actually is an undersung classic. Sure it has some plot holes but where else do you get these actors on screen together doing something that may be semi accurate with cryptography? We love it, we hope you will too.

Feb 26, 202201:23:56
Swordfish

Swordfish

It's a techy, hacky, cyber double bill this month starting with what we'd love to call an under appreciated classic ... but we can't cos it's not. What it is though is The early 00s on a plate! From Travolta chewing the sets, to Halle Berry smouldering so hard she's in danger of setting fire to John's interesting hair piece, a techno sound track from none other than Paul Oakenfold - it's got it all ... so why don't we like it? Well you'll just have to listen to find out.

WDAWKT Top 10 Christmas Songs!

WDAWKT Top 10 Christmas Songs!

It's beginning to look a lot like the most wonderful time for dashing through the snow with all I Want for Christmas... we're back with our second festive top ten, this time it's Christmas songs! As ever, a medley of seasonal songs and a reminder to not record in the same pub that's showing the rugby (sorry about that). There's something for everyone, from classic crooners, to punk pop hits, heck even the muppets show up again.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from WDAWKT and we'll see you in the New Year

WDAWKT Top 10 Christmas Movies!

WDAWKT Top 10 Christmas Movies!

Happy festive season to one and all. And in the spirit of giving, we're giving you not one but 10 movies wrapped up in this, the first of our Christmas specials. From the warming seasonal classics, to the hotly debated, each and every film on the list is hand picked by one of the WDAWKT crew to bring a little holiday joy into your life. Should it be the case that we haven't included your favourite then let us know, and we'll definitely add it next year, probably, maybe.

Auguste Escoffier

Auguste Escoffier

We figured a change of pace would be welcome this month and so we dive into the modern kitchen with the father of modern cuisine Auguste Escoffier ... not literally, he's been dead for a while. But we get to take a tasty trip through the history of the man himself, his impact on the kitchen, and we do it all to a back drop of carousel music (don't ask). Bon appetit!

Robots!

Robots!

Continuing with our shameless rehashing of previous content in the name of nostalgia (what? If Hollywood can do it then we definitely can), we're heading back to the scary, wonderful world of robotics. From fictional to friendly to "holy cow is that real?" we cover the origins, the current day and look at the future of what could be. WE TALKIN' 'BOUT 'BOTS BABY!!!

Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049

We're going back to the beginning ... almost, as we revisit two of our earliest episodes. The first is a sequel to one of our favourite films, and it kinda holds up. Denis Villeneuve, Roger Deakins, and an all star cast return to LA to make a movie that's nearly as good as the first one. But not quite. Enjoy!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Do you ever wonder if we just phone this in? Well sometimes we do - by returning to a topic that's so beloved to us, your nerdy, inebriated hosts, that we can pretty much just show up and smash it out. This month, after the excitement of John Williams, we're back with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it's exactly what you expect... except it took Mike like 4 goes to get started. Enjoy!

Oct 02, 202159:57
John Williams

John Williams

It was only a matter of time before we finally had to spend a whole episode talking about one of the most influential composers in cinema history. John Williams (not a sir) has scored some of our favourite film franchises, plus a couple we're not so hot on, so this bumper episode is all about him. From humble beginnings as a jazz pianist, to the world's largest bookshelf for all his awards, and a return of the John Williams game, we can only hope that this does the man justice. He is, after all, an absolute legend.

Hand-held Gaming

Hand-held Gaming

Did you know there were over 50 hand-held gaming systems out there? It's not just about the gameboy!!! Ok it's mostly about Gameboys, but it's still a finger flying, button clicking, adventure from the early handheld battles, through the battery life renaissance, and into the future as we look at all things digit-al ... digit ... as in finger? No?

Lethal Weapon 3 and 4

Lethal Weapon 3 and 4

Picking up where we left off it's time to finish this! This being the Lethal Weapon series in case you weren't sure. And while the first two are dark and moody, the second two are ... also pretty dark but feature Jet Li and some seriously silly stuntwork.

Oh and Rob gets really cross about E3, Mike decides to break into spontaneous song for no reason, and it audibly rains throughout the whole recording - like WDAWKT Noir only we're not washed up PIs with a half a bottle of whiskey in the desk drawer and a tragic back story.

Anyway, enjoy!

Jul 10, 202101:25:55
Lethal Weapon 1 and 2

Lethal Weapon 1 and 2

Proving once and for all that we may be too old for this stuff, we're back with a double header, an iconic duo of films starring the iconic duo of Gibson and Glover, its the first part of Lethal Weapon!

Mike Buys Bitcoin

Mike Buys Bitcoin

Turns out, even after our amazing Live Show where we talked all about BitCoin, Mike has never actually bought any. This changes today as we cover most of the entire process, from opening an exchange account, to funding, trading, configuration of a hardware wallet and monitoring the value of BitCoin. Of course we're doing this outside a pub so expect it to go wrong...

Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher

We didn't go looking for trouble, but sometimes, when you're recording a podcast in a small bar, in a sleepy town in the middle of Jersey, trouble finds you.

In this case, trouble was the owner of the bar demanding we settle our tab ... which was fine cos we'd been there a while discussing the cultural impact of Jack Reacher! Over 24 years, 25 books 2 movies and one soon to be release TV show Reacher is a brand juggernaut. Quality is debatable, but success and impact is not.

So grab your folding toothbrush, hop on the WDAWKT bus (destination anywhere but here) as we head deep into Reacher country.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

And now for something completely different. We told you season 3 was gonna mix it up and this is us doing just that. Our first ever episode dedicated entirely to one computer game (just happens to be one of Rob's faves). 1992 SNES Action RPG The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

From the concept through to it's impact on later games and the very odd semi realtime expansion that was only available in Japan, we hack, slash, dash and fall per way through the world of Hyrule in both its guises, and along the way come to realise that the true power of the Triforce was within us all along... also that retro games are super cool!

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell

Continuing our two part exploration of classic Anime, this episode is all about Ghost in the Shell. And we mean the 1995 original not the weird, live-action remake, or one of the many spin offs. We explore the expanded universe of the movie (briefly) and generally marvel at the progression of animation techniques that led rise to this absolute masterpiece.

Don't worry btw, we're not turning into an Anime podcast, we're back in our next episode with something completely different!

Scrooged

Scrooged

Ho ho ho, it's Christmas time! Which can only mean one thing, Mike and Rob have dug into the Xmas movie archives to find something for you to unwrap. But you don't need to wait till the big day, oh no, our gift to you is ready right now, and it's Richard Donner's underrated dark festive cautionary tale Scrooged!

Recorded almost entirely off the cuff (because someone forgot to make any notes), we join Bill Murray on his hysterical interpretation of Dicken's classic, missing no opportunity to relish in delight at every nuance of one of our favourite Christmas films of all time.

Space Travel

Space Travel

Come fly with us, amongst the stars ... well star ... ok we're going to the moon and that's about it. But we are exploring (see what we did there?) the rocket-powered world of space travel which remains a fantastic example of mankind going a long way in a short time and then realising they have a lot further to go before they're done and giving up for a bit.

Sputnik? We got it. Gemini? Obvs. Apollo? 1 through 17. And a smattering of shuttles, some Space X Heavy action and a load more besides.

Dune

Dune

Space, Spice, Sting, Scrotum Turds, Toto ... it can only be Dune in this month's WDAWKT movie extravaganza.

We'd originally planned this to coincide with the release of the new movie but, COVID happened, the new movie got bounced to 2021 and we decided to do it anyway. To be clear, this is Lynch's 1984 imagining and you'll have to listen to find out if we liked it.

With a very convoluted plot summary (because it's a very convoluted plot - it's Dune), a reasonable comparison to the book, some brutal honesty and 5-star reviews (as Mike says, "there are loads of 1-star reviews - have you seen this film?") it's a long ole episode ... but it's a long ole film so what are you gonna do?

Beer

Beer

It was bound to happen eventually, and it was even more bound to happen during backwards month. For MIke's Debut Deep Dive he's diving deep into the art of brewing as we talk beer!

From the truly ancient historical roots through to modern-day hipster brewing trends we sip, gulp, quaff and belch our way through the wonderful, rich and complex world of beer making ... while also drinking beer. The only thing that's missing from this month's episode is the kebab at the end of it all, and we figure you know just where to find one of those.

Tron

Tron

It's backwards month! And that means Rob is doing a movie and Mike is in charge of the deep dive. Which film could Rob possibly want to talk about for an hour? Well, it would be Hackers or Big Trouble but we've already done those. Frozen II was considered but Mike would likely explode. So we've gone back to the 80s as we download into the grid and play some awesome video games in Tron!

With all the usual segments you'd expect, a rambling plot review, one-star reviews and lots of yummy production tidbits, all you have to do is sit back, download and try to avoid getting digitized by an industrial laser beam.

Time Travel

Time Travel

We're going back in time! To a time before time was timed, but do we have enough time to talk about time? The answers to this and absolutely nothing else are to be found in this weird and wonderful episode where we talk Time Travel.

Listen as we explore the possibility of visiting the past, the future and end up right back where we started. With paradoxes galore, we hope you'll join us on this journey through chronological madness... if you kind find the time that is.

Back to the Future

Back to the Future

"We're were going, we don't need roads!" ... but we do need to spend at least an hour chatting about 80's time travel classic Back to the Future. From concept through to execution we lift the lid on this tested family favourite with 1-star reviews, a fair quantity of debate over the merits of the other movies in the series, and the realization that, according to this movie, a white teenager invented rock n roll ... sure.

Typography

We're breaking it down to the letter, crossing the t's and dotting the i's, writing it up and writing it down ... yeah, it's time to talk Type! This one is longer than normal but then it's not often we do a deep dive into something that's been around since the DAWN OF TIME! And there's a quiz and they always throw our timings off.

So if you want to know the difference between and En Dash and an Em Dash, or you're curious about why an ampersand is an ampersand, or you want to be amazed by the lengths samurai would go to prove themselves worthy (that's in the bloopers btw) then hit play and enjoy.

The Third Man

The Third Man

Vienna, 1949. Still ravaged by the ravages of the second World War, the once beautiful city is bruised and battered but still standing, hints of her former glory still present even as the Americans, British, French, and Soviets portion her up.

This is the stage for the Third Man, British Noir excellence which has been ranked as variously, "the greatest British film of all time" and "the second best British film ever" ... so it's really good!

We explore the twisty world of Harry Lime and chums and along the way learn a little bit about what it was like to make a film in the true golden age of cinema.

The French Connection

"Popeye is here!"

Everyone relax, we're back with the '71 gritty, suspense-filled cop drama The French Connection. We're walking the mean streets of a pretty grim new York city as we try to work out just what the hell is going on in William Friedkin's classic.

With one-star reviews, no small amount of gushing and the answer to that perennial question - is it still a car chase if you're chasing a train - we hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it. And if not? No biggy, there's another episode in 2 weeks.

Ok, so this one is also an hour and a half long. On the plus side, by the time you get to 45 mins in you'll be halfway through our Star Trek Mega Marathon!

In this episode, we talk about Nimoy's ability to direct and make money, Shatner's inability to direct ... and to make money, transparent aluminium, iPads in space, and do our best to work through the worst and second-worst of the whole series and the one where they travel back in time!

Just remember, however bad your day may be going, you're not the one who had to remove Shatner's gusset after a hard day's filming / directing.

Superman

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Mike and Rob and a bumper episode full of super goodness. While this one can't claim to be faster than a speeding anything (it's long) at least it sounds better than the last two!

Learn everything there is to know about the making of the O.G. Superman (none of that reboot BS here, oh no!) including the stuff the had to invent to make the movie work, the amazing alternate casting that never was, and the wonder of Marlon Brando going "full Brando" and suggesting he could be re-cast as a bagel (we're not joking).

The Star Wars Holiday Special

The Star Wars Holiday Special

Beginning a long career of cashing in on his own franchise, George Lucas alleges he had nothing to do with this 1978, made for TV, musical bonanza. We call BS as this is clearly the work of some kind of twisted genius with a penchant for variety TV.

Featuring songs by Diahann Carroll, Jefferson Starship, Bea Arthur, and event Carrie Fisher which just goes to show you really can buy anybody, it's so utterly terrible that it took us two attempts to record it! So gather round and let's enjoy the age-old tale of Wookies, life day and the importance of family... who will likely thank you to not ever show them this

It finally happened - we did a Tarrantino movie. Specifically, The Hateful Eight from 2015.

Mercifully, MIke manages to avoid going full film nerd and, instead, explores the nuance of one of the world's greatest directors in traditional puerile fashion. Rob gets confused by the movie and, it's very loud throughout. Enjoy!

The Life of Jim Henson

The Life of Jim Henson

Sorry We're (Drunk) and Late! It'll be worth the wait as this month we delve into the the genius of Jim Henson! Rob takes Mike through the life of the master puppeteer, writer and Director; Mike totally gets more than 50% on a quiz about Muppets, and things get downright emotional talking about childhood! Oh, and bad accents and dick jokes. Enjoy!

The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal

1982, or a thousand years ago whichever you prefer, Rob has dragged Mike back into one of his childhood favourites in this month's movie segment, as they explore the muppet filled planet of Thra in The Dark Crystal.

Featuring a solid critique of a modern classic, a rock hard lambasting of the sequel, and an iron-clad agreement that the soundtrack is utter pants, we invite you to join us as we attempt to find smut in a beloved children's classic ... and succeed!
