UNCG is partnering with Guilford County Schools (GCS) to help public school teachers use the arts more effectively, thanks to a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education.
The Professional Development for Arts Educators grant will fund the Guilford County Schools Arts Integration Academy (GCS-AIA), a partnership between GCS, UNCG and a community of local artists, galleries, theaters and museums.
UNCG’s College of Visual and Performing Arts will receive $525,000 over four years to provide arts-integrated coursework and training to 90 teachers across 18 schools in Guilford County. UNCG faculty and staff will help teachers of all subjects use the arts to enhance curriculum. The university will also provide tools to help administrators evaluate the effectiveness of the new coursework.
“This project is a natural extension of our community-engaged work,” said Dr. Peter Alexander, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. “As a public institution, it’s our job to serve the region. This is an opportunity to make our artistic and intellectual resources available to help improve graduation rates and overall student success.”
UNCG is currently in the process of developing coursework. Implementation will begin in the summer of 2018.
GCS was the only school system in North Carolina to receive the Professional Development for Arts Educators grant. Just 20 grants in 14 states were awarded.
