Snapchat: Snap Channel shuttered

Despite its foray into the original content space, social media platform Snapchat has brought an end to its current attempt in the market — though the company may revisit original content in the future.

As originally reported by Deadline, Snapchat is ending Snap Channel, the company’s movement launched in January to produce its own original content, in addition to the other companies creating programming featured on the app’s “Discover” tab. The Snap Channel team included Head of Program Planning and Development Marcus Wiley, who EW can confirm has left in addition to several other members of the Snap Channel team.

“Given that we are winding down the Snap Channel, it’s natural that Marcus would want to explore other opportunities. He is a tremendous talent and we wish him well,” Snapchat said in a statement released to EW.

Snap Channel had previously been removed from the app with an intended relaunch, but the reported closure of the team, has effectively ended this particular dive into original content. EW can confirm that the company is open to returning to a method of producing their own original content down the line, just not in Snap Channel form.
