Getting ready for Family Weekend/Homecoming 2015!
It’s one week out from Family Weekend/Homecoming 2015 and campus is buzzing with preparations for the arrival of alumni, family and friends. Or as we like to call the collective group #OurRadFam.
We thought to give you an idea of what to expect from next weekend we’d show a recap of last year.
Here’s some of what to expect during the celebrations from October 16 - 18:
1. Adorable Puppies
The Highlander Family Dog Show is a time honored tradition showcasing some of our most adorable family members. While these four-legged friends may not have attended a class, they definitely have left their marks on campus.
2. Getting Your Grove On
Last year, visitors and students got to enjoy line dancing on the quad. While busting a move might not be your dad’s strong suit, it could be an interesting Instagram picture to share with the rest of the family.
3. Local Artistry
One of the biggest questions in a parent’s mind is often, “What is the community like that surrounds that university?” The Appalachian Folk Arts Festival is a great way to show parents the heritage and cultural that students are exposed to when venturing out into the New River Valley.
4. Some one-on-one time with the president
This is one event the parents enjoy. President Penelope Kyle reserves a time for parents to come and ask anything that is on their minds. It’s a great incentive for students to keep grades up, tasks on schedule, and social media pages in check as students are not allowed in the session and you never know what might come out of mom or dad’s mouth.
5. Some serious action
Not only is this weekend great bonding, it’s a great way to connect with those who have once been in a student’s shoes. Alumni events bring together #OurRadFam in a variety of ways. One of the most popular is the Alumni Lacrosse Game. You can bond over high fives while enjoying all of the action the game has to offer.
6. Old friends and familiar faces
Throughout the weekend, alumni, students and family are encouraged to come together as one Radford University family. Alumni Village is a great place to see all of those who have made a lasting mark on your past. It’s the largest event of the weekend.
7. Bonding over some fun and games
Game room time gives everyone the chance to chill out and relax while enjoying activities offered at the Bonnie. Gutter balls and pool table scratches are optional but fairly common.
8. Family Dinner
Last but not least, is family dinner. It’s a perfect time to catch up on what’s been going on so far in the semester. While we can’t promise parents might have a million questions or students give a few shoulder shrugs, we can guarantee that there’s no better moment to cherish than time around the table.
