Peter Martin Trio
"We Always Swing" Jazz Series presents the Peter Martin Trio, Oct. 11, 3:30 and 7pm at Murry's. Pianist Peter Martin may just be one of those musicians who you think you never heard of – or saw perform – but you’d likely be incorrect – especially if you have been a “We Always Swing” Jazz Series participant. The St. Louis native has appeared here previously on at least three occasions – with vocalist Dianne Reeves, bassist Christian McBride’s Inside Straight ensemble and most recently as a member of the Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 sextet. On this, his fourth Jazz Series appearance, we thought it about time to give the St. Louis native-turned New Orleans resident-turned post-Katrina St. Louisan a leadership spot – particularly when he told us his bandmates on this occasion would be two like-minded and equally exceptional musical spirits: bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson.
Like the pianist, who is known equally as singer Reeves’ long-time musical director, Rogers and Hutchinson are in demand, big-time. The former, a St. Thomas native, has worked with the likes of saxophonists Charlies Lloyd, Jimmy Greene and Joshua Redman as well as with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, among others – including Martin. Hutcherson, meanwhile, is equally versatile, having enjoyed a long stay with legendary bassist Ray Brown, iconic saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Benny Green and Ms. Diana Krall as well as with scores of others noteworthy peers and colleagues. Together, they constitute a forthright, impressive trio as some spice to their largely straight-ahead classic and original repertoire, but doing so with a bit of modernism.
