La Salle swimming coach Lichtner, 62, dies

Frank Lichtner, 62, who taught and coached swimming at La Salle for 25 years, died of cancer Tuesday morning. The Explorers won the Catholic League Championship every season he was the head coach. The Explorers have won the last four state titles and every District 12 crown since 2009.

Mr. Lichtner was honored at the school's Honors Convocation on Sept. 24.

"Those of us who knew Mr. Lichtner . . . will have many stories to tell of his investment, his expertise, his self-effacing, student-focused demeanor," La Salle president Brother James Butler said in a statement. "After a quarter century at La Salle, Frank leaves an incredible legacy both in the stature of our swimming program and in the lives and achievements of its alumni."

Mr. Lichtner's family will receive visitors next Tuesday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 1525 Elkins Ave., Abington, Pa. A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m.

Interment will be private.

Golf

La Salle's Eric Carlidge shot a 3-over-par 73 to win the Catholic League championship at JC Melrose Country Club. La Salle also won its 12th team title in 15 years.

Archbishop Wood's Karly Brown won the girls' title by shooting a 75. Little Flower won the team crown.

Boys' Soccer

Evan Vare scored the lone goal as Central Bucks East squeaked past North Penn, 1-0, in a Suburban One Continental match.

Vare, who committed to play at Lafayette on Monday, scored on a penalty kick 20 minutes in.

Austin Prime, who missed 2 1/2 weeks with a fractured orbital bone, returned to record four saves and the shutout.

Catholic League. Eric Trush scored two first-half goals to lead Father Judge past Conwell-Egan, 3-0.

Jared Dillon, Brandon Gutekunst, and Patrick Madgey each scored twice and Roman Catholic beat Archbishop Carroll, 9-0.

Girls' Soccer

Meghan McCool scored six goals, and Springside Chestnut Hill topped Germantown Friends, 6-1, in nonleague action.

Catholic Academies. Jules Bradbury and Sydney Reid each scored in the final eight minutes to help Villa Maria top Nazareth Academy, 2-1.
