Hot tub canoodlers, inattentive parents and hallway hellraisers: The most annoying hotel guests revealed (are you one of them?)

  • Travel website Expedia asked holidaymakers to rank annoying hotel guests
  • Inattentive parents and guests who are loud in the hallway topped the list
  • Study also found that 27 per cent of guests don't bother to tip hotel staff

It seems almost every holidaymaker has a story about a fellow hotel guest who left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.

Now research has revealed the most annoying hotel guests of all time – with inattentive parents who allow their children to run wild topping the list.

Loud and obnoxious guests and those who are a little too public with their displays of affection made the cut as well, and while some holidaymakers may nod in agreement with the findings they may also be guilty of annoying other travellers.

In its inaugural hotel etiquette study, travel website Expedia asked 1,022 holidaymakers to rank the frustrating, sneaky and sometimes quirky behaviour of fellow hotel guests.

By a slim margin, inattentive parents were named the most aggravating – with 67 per cent of respondents including them on their list.

In second place, ‘hallway hellraisers’ – the guests who are loud and obnoxious in the corridors, especially late at night – were cited by 64 per cent of those polled by Gfk, a global market research company that conducted the survey on behalf of Expedia in the US.

Guests who are too happy to complain to staff about minor inconveniences (54 per cent), those who are loud in their room (52 per cent) and travellers who are constantly bickering (26 per cent) rounded out the top five.

Poolside partiers (22 per cent), indiscreet lovemakers (21 per cent), hot tub canoodlers (20 per cent), drunk business travellers (12 per cent) and elevator chatterboxes (six per cent) also made the top 10.

John Morrey, vice president and general manager of Expedia.com, said: ‘While etiquette violations differ, they tend to come down to the same behaviour: whether or not guests respect the strangers in close proximity to them.

‘The same is true for flying, or for driving. A modicum of consideration for your fellow travellers can go a very long way and may ultimately enhance your overall travel experience.’

The survey also examined guests’ tipping habits, finding 27 per cent don’t bother to tip hotel workers at all. Housekeepers are tipped more than any other employee.
