Fall Rescue and Safety Training: Is Your Team Prepared for the Worst?

Fall protection violations have been an issue for the better part of the last decade, which is why every employer should be working tirelessly to enhance their fall rescue and safety training. In the unfortunate event that you must make a rescue, having the right combination of knowledge, skills, and manpower will help you to successfully conduct the rescue. We recommend the following steps to help you prepare.

Step 1: Prevention

Prevention is the most crucial step in dealing with falls. There are five stages in fall protection; learn about fall protection rules, regularly monitor the workplace for hazards, eliminate hazards where possible, educate workers about the remaining hazards and proper safety protocol, and install and maintain fall protection systems.

Step 2: Identification

After taking steps to prevent common falls, the next step should be to find out the worst possible situation that you might have to deal with. By identifying your potentially worst-case scenarios, you can provide necessary tools and PPE to your workers, as well as appropriately arm your rescue team with proper fall rescue and safety training.

Step 3: Establishing a Team

In most companies, fall rescues are performed by workers without special training. While this has served many Edmonton companies well, you could undertake fall rescues even more efficiently by selecting a group of workers from your team and providing them with special fall rescue and safety training. This would allow you to tackle even some of those sophisticated rescues.

Step 4: The Right Fall Rescue and Safety Training

There are varying approaches in fall rescue. For instance, one can fall off a roof and onto the front yard, in which case the rescue would be straightforward. But, in some instances, a worker can fall into a tight space with sharp edges or sensitive equipment. Arming your rescue team with the right fall rescue and safety training would help you better prepare for any kind situation.

Step 5: Rescue Plan

Once you’ve established a rescue pre-plan, it should become part of your comprehensive fall protection program. The fall protection program should then be regularly reviewed and updated to see if there are opportunities for improvements or need for additional fall rescue and safety training.
