The project encompasses development, design, and manufacturing of the ETCS Level 2 Baseline 3 system as well as installation, connection to existing train control systems and commissioning.
The latest contract follows retrofitting work conducted by Alstom on 39 ICE1 sets for use on the Berlin - Munich high-speed line, which was commissioned with the opening of the Erfurt - Ebensfeld section in December 2017. The manufacturer also retrofitted 70 class 411 and class 415 ICE T and 66 ICE3 trains with its Atlas 200 ETCS ahead of the opening of the line. Alstom won a €30m contract to equip 40 class 407 ICE trains with ETCS Level 2 in September. These trains will be used on the new Stuttgart (Wendlingen) – Ulm high-speed line and on the Belgian network.
Alstom’s sites in Berlin (installation, design and project management), Chareleroi (product development, assembly and validation), and Lyon/Villeurbanne (manufacturing of components) will participate in the project. Conversion and recommissioning of the vehicles will take place at the ICE plant in Hamburg-Eidelstedt.
