Another Round of Storms for Central Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley
August 14, 2017
By WeatherBug's Alexa Maines
A stagnant weather pattern will bring another round of severe weather and heavy rain to the nation’s midsection, kicking the weekend off on a stormy note.
The Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley will once again receive the brunt of severe weather today thanks to the slow-moving front that brought severe weather to the Plains Wednesday and Thursday. Warm, humid air at the surface and abundant upper-level energy will help fuel afternoon through early-evening storms, with the first storms likely forming in western Kansas.
There is a Tornado Watch in northwestern Missouri that includes St. Joseph and Kansas City. A line of severe thunderstorms will move through that area this evening.
Since these storms could produce torrential downpours, flash flooding is a possibility. Heavy rain fell over Kansas and northern Missouri overnight so the risk for flooding throughout today will be even higher. If you encounter a water-covered roadway, be sure to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” because water is always deeper than it appears.
If you haven’t already, be sure to download the WeatherBug mobile phone application, which will give notify you of watches and warnings issued in your area. The application also includes the Spark lightning detection app, which is a GPS-based application that tells you where the nearest lightning strike is so you can Know Before the storm arrives and quickly find safety.
