Buena Vista, Bridgeton set Memorial Day celebrations

The Buena Vista Memorial Day Service is set for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Stone in front of the municipal building at 890 Harding Highway.

The service will remember all those from Buena Vista Township who gave their lives in the service. The Richland and Milmay services also have been moved to the township building.

In Bridgeton, a Memorial Day celebration is set for Monday at the Old Broad Street Church and Cemetery from noon to 3:30 p.m.

The theme is “What Decoration Day Means to Me.” The program will include a history of Decoration Day.

A picnic will be held at noon on the church lawn. Water will be provided. There will be assistance for handicapped individuals. A restroom also is available.

The program starts at 12:45 p.m. in the church. Mayor Albert Kelly will speak. A quartet of Rowan University music students led by Kyle Sheppard will perform popular songs as a brief history of the changing dates Memorial Day is given.

At 2 p.m., the veterans’ graves will be decorated by anyone who wishes to volunteer. Volunteers can also decorate after the closing ceremonies. Family members of veterans buried in the cemetery can decorate their relative’s grave. All veterans’ organizations are invited to attend.

Closing ceremonies will be held at 3 p.m. and include Honor Guard of the Mead-Woodward VFW Post 1795, a cannon salute and Taps.
