Join GHF for Health Care Unscrambled 2020

Thank you for making Health Care Unscrambled 2020 a great success! This annual tradition, held during the first week of the Georgia Legislative Session, provided a special opportunity for health care advocates and stakeholders to hear from state policymakers about what they plan to tackle in the year ahead.

A bi-partisan panel of Georgia’s legislative leaders discussed the health care issues they plan to address in 2020 and how these issues may impact consumers. This year’s legislative panelists are:

Senator Ben Watson (R-Savannah)
Senator Harold Jones (D-Augusta)
Representative Jodi Lott (R-Evans)
Representative Beth Moore (D-Peachtree Corners)

In the second part of our program, we were joined by Dr. Jamila Michener, Author of Fragmented Democracy:  Medicaid, Federalism and Unequal Politics and Assistant Professor of Government at Cornell University. Dr. Michener's presentation and interactive discussion explored the relationship between Medicaid and civic engagement. Woven together, the stories of Georgians (and others) seeking health coverage and care, and quantitative data that documents trends across states tell a compelling tale about the intersection of health equity and politics.

Linda S. Lowe Advocacy Award moves to HCU 2020

For the first time, GHF presented the Linda S. Lowe Advocacy Award at Health Care Unscrambled! This year’s award was presented posthumously to Dawn Alford for her advocacy on behalf of Georgians with disabilities.

Dawn was the Public Policy Director for the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities from 2013 until her unexpected passing in July 2019. In this role, Dawn led advocacy efforts to improve and protect access to quality health care, increase opportunities for accessible education, and to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to live full lives in their communities.

The Linda S. Lowe Health Advocacy Award is presented to an individual who has had an out-sized impact on the health of Georgians through policy advocacy. For her advocacy work on behalf of Georgians with disabilities, we were proud to honor Dawn Alford with this award.
