Ben Shapiro’s Conservative Website Reportedly Looking at Purchasing The Blaze (UPDATE)
February 13, 2018It looks like we may soon see a merger of two of the most well-known Trump-skeptic news sites.
According to the The Daily Beast, the billionaires behind Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire are currently in talks to buy Glenn Beck’s conservative media empire TheBlaze.
As the Beast noted in their piece, the Wilks family funds Shapiro’s site and are looking to “to expand their holdings in conservative media.” They previously looked at Breitbart, but a difficult relationship with Rebekah Mercer prevented that from occurring.
Shapiro didn’t exactly deny that talks are underway regarding the potential purchase of TheBlaze. Per the Beast:
“TheBlaze welcomed us to the space as allies from the beginning, and we’re always looking for ways to strengthen our partnerships with our allies,” he said.
An employee of the TheBlaze’s television network told the Beast that word has spread within the company that Beck is either looking to sell to Shapiro’s site or partner with it. It was also noted that the purchase “appears more likely than not.”
In recent months, it has been reported that TheBlaze has been going through financial troubles. Last summer, the company conducted a mass layoff. Following that news, the head of the media company said that if the truth was no longer profitable, they’d end up shutting TheBlaze down.
UPDATE 9:44 PM ET: Beck told Mediaite the following about the potential purchase of his media outlet:
“While we’ve had our share of bumps in the road, TheBlaze is a strong brand and a good business, which I’m always looking to make even better. I think Ben and his team are remarkable, and we see the world in a similar way. We have kicked the tires for years about possibly doing something together, even before the Daily Wire was a thing. As for what that could be, if and when it comes together? I don’t know. But I believe TheBlaze’s best years are still ahead. I am not interested in selling but I am always looking to find strategic partners that make sense. I’ve learned there’s an advantage to being counted out, people never see you coming.”
