Feeder Schools Lists published for 2016

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 06/12/2016. Feeder Schools Lists published for 2016Tags: Parenting Teachers

The college progression data or information on ‘feeder schools’ to third level for autumn 2016 is available today on Schooldays.ie providing school-by-school information on which students have progressed to which colleges this year.

To view the information on your school for the last five years on Schooldays.ie, visit 'Find a secondary school' and when you locate your school click on 'College Progression Stats' on the bottom right of the page.

Schooldays.ie does not provide 'league table' ranking of schools as very often the progression percentage (as published in the newspapers) is not a true rate of progression as repeat leaving cert students are included in the data from colleges.

However a summary of the trends identified are outlined below

Fee paying versus non fee paying

Fee-paying schools continue to dominate the top of the tables. Twenty of the top twenty five schools that send the highest proportion of students to high-points courses are fee-paying. High-points courses are those offered in the seven universities as well as certain other colleges such as DIT and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.

However, according to the Independent students from state-funded schools are continuing to narrow the gap when it comes to college entry. Since 2011 there has been a five fold increase in the number of non-fee schools with a 100 % progression rate – up from 11 to 58 – the number was 53 last year.

The most improved schools this year as listed in the Irish Times are identified as Clochar na Toirbhirte, Thurles, Coláiste na Carraige, Dun Na Ngall and St Aloysius School Cork.

Irish-Medium Schools
This year’s data once again shows Irish-medium schools performing at the top of the tables. The top school in the country is listed as Coláiste na Coiribe from Galway with just 57 students. Coláiste Ide Dingle is ninth on the list while Coláiste Eoin in Dublin is at 10th.

Location matters
Geography continues to play a significant role in college choice with student more likely to enrol in a college convenient to them.

Grind schools are excluded from feeder tables, as objective data is not available on them. Previous research has shown the progression rates from grind schools are broadly in line with average third-level progression rates.
