BRATTLEBORO — Experience language, culture and culinary arts in Tanzania this summer with Gogi Abroad.

Gogi Abroad leader Leyeyo Kipamba was born in Longido, Tanzania, where we will cultivate a sense of genuine connection with the people, language and culture.

Join Gogi Abroad on Friday, March 17, at 6 p.m. at Oak Meadow, 132 Main St. Leyeyo and I will discuss the upcoming trip. There will be African textiles, art and jewelry from Longido artists for sale at the event. All proceeds go directly back to artists in Longido and to help support eight deaf young people at a school near Longido.

This summer Gogi Abroad students will have the opportunity to go outward and discover firsthand the Maasai people, traditions, language and culture. This trip is sure to be unique because Leyeyo was born in Longido. He is Maasai but has grown up in Vermont. He travels home to Longido each year so he may take part in tribal rituals, care for his family and visit with friends. This adventure offers a rare opportunity to experience traditional tribal Maasai culture in a close and personal way.

Leyeyo's village welcomes Gogi students to Tanzania with its beautiful landscape, culture, and Maasai warriors. Students will focus on dynamic communications in Maa and Swahili, culinary arts and the building of a school and traditional bomas. Students will discover the waterfalls near Mt. Kilimanjaro and experience sustainable practices of farming in the area. They will also go to the jewel of Ngorongoro's Crater and experience a true safari with the Maasai.

Gogi Abroad believes that through world travel and cross-cultural engagement, we can develop a broader lens to view the human experience. Then together, we can work as citizens of the earth for the benefit of all.
