The SNP has told Scottish teachers they already earn £1,300 more than their English counterparts after unions lodged a formal dispute over an “insulting” below-inflation pay offer.

Figures from the UK government show that the average annual salary for full-time Scottish teachers and other education professionals is £41,350. This compares with a UK average of just more than £40,000.

Salary levels for Scottish staff are second only to those in London.
