Upcoming EA tour in Australia

Currently scrambling through a swathe of slidedecks and suchlike… – that’s me getting ready for my upcoming ‘Antipodean Tour’, with a wide range of sessions on enterprise-architecture and related themes currently booked for various dates and places in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Session details

Here’s a bit more detail on the formal sessions – keynote, workshops and masterclasses and free meetups – that I’ll be doing on this tour.

Session:

  • Keynote: The Enterprise Is The Story’ (Australasian Enterprise Architecture Conference, Sydney)

Date/location:

  • 9:00-10:00am, 19 October 2015; Luna Park, Sydney

Summary:

What is it that makes an enterprise into an enterprise? The answer is a story…

Most current approaches to enterprise-architecture start from technology – which works well enough if you are only working on the technology itself. But as enterprise-architecture expands outward into the business, or we need to work on ‘digital transformation’ where people and their needs necessarily come to the fore, a technology centred approach starts to show its limitations.

This lively session introduces a complementary, more people-oriented approach to enterprise-architecture, built around a concept of ‘the enterprise as story’. We’ll explore:
• what story is, in the context for enterprise-architecture
• how story acts as a unifying theme for the architecture
• how to identify and develop the enterprise-story
• how story underlies enterprise values and principles
• how story provides guidance and governance for information-architecture, technology-architecture, digital-transformation and service-design

After this session, you’ll see your architecture with new eyes – open to new possibilities and new ways to engage with all of your stakeholders in the broader business. Share and Enjoy!

Session:

  • Workshop: Doing EA: a maturity-based approach to enterprise-architecture development’ (Australasian Enterprise Architecture Conference, Sydney)

Date/location:

  • all-day, 21 October 2015; Christie, 100 Walker Street, North Sydney

Summary:

Starting out in enterprise-architecture is rarely easy – and to keep going with it can be even harder. There are frameworks aplenty, but they can often seem large, cumbersome and unwieldy, offering too much of what we don’t need and not enough of what we do. Useful, yes, but surely there must be a better way? – and especially, a way that can fully engage people beyond IT in developing the enterprise-architecture?

There is. It’s called a maturity-model: a step-by-step guide to what to do, when, why and with whom, for what business-value at each stage.

In this practical, hands-on workshop we’ll explore:
• What a maturity model provides for architecture
• The difference between maturity-level and maturity-step – and why the latter is more useful
• What to do within each maturity-step, and what value it provides
• How to use a maturity-model to support digital-transformation and other major business change
The workshop will be valuable for architects and others with all levels of experience, and applicable for all types of architecture, from IT-only to whole-of-enterprise.
This workshop is based in part on Tom Graves’ book Doing Enterprise Architecture: process and practice in the real enterprise. Each workshop-participant will receive a free copy of the book.

Session:

  • Workshop: ‘Making sense for the whole enterprise’ (Day 1 of Tetradian workshop/masterclass)

Dates / locations:

  • all-day, 26 October 2015; Clifton’s, Parmelia House, 191 St George’s Terrace, Perth
  • all-day, 29 October 2015; x:pand Sydney, Level 2, 24 Hickson Rd, Sydney
  • all-day, 5 November 2015; x:pand Melbourne, Level 9, 257 Collins St, Melbourne

Summary:

How do we create an enterprise that is sustainable and responsive into the future? How do we make sense of complexity and disruption, in technology, in markets, and more? How do we design for change, rather than reacting to it? And how do we properly include all of the people-issues that are so central to a modern enterprise?

Accommodating up to 30 people, this one-day interactive workshop will provide you with the means to tackle these concerns in everyday practice. To do this, we will explore a range of techniques and thinking tools, based around ideas of ‘the ecology of enterprise’ to apply sensemaking and decision-making in enterprise architecture and design. We will focus on the Enterprise Canvas as an approach to service modelling at every scale from microservices to whole-of-enterprise.

Session:

  • Masterclass: ‘Real-world enterprise-architecture’ (Day 2 of Tetradian workshop/masterclass)

Dates / locations:

  • all-day, 27 October 2015; Clifton’s, Parmelia House, 191 St George’s Terrace, Perth
  • all-day, 30 October 2015; x:pand Sydney, Level 2, 24 Hickson Rd, Sydney
  • all-day, 6 November 2015; x:pand Melbourne, Level 9, 257 Collins St, Melbourne

Summary:

With a maximum of 10 people, this exclusive and practical masterclass offers attendees an opportunity to work on real-life enterprise-architecture challenges in the company of their peers. It brings together ideas and experiences, representing many different industries, different contexts and different needs.

The class will help you apply new concepts and approaches in everyday enterprise architecture by working on a real world challenge of your choice. During the day you will find new ways to make sense of your challenges, working with a wide range of frameworks and techniques, including those from the methods and tools explored in the Day 1 workshop.

Further details / bookings:

Session:

  • Meetup: ‘Attracting, retaining and getting the best from your architects’ (x:pand / Australasian Architecture Network)

Dates / locations:

  • 18:00pm onwards, 15 October 2105; central Melbourne (location-detail on booking)
  • 18:00pm onwards, 22 October 2015; central Sydney (location-detail on booking)

Summary:

The Australasian Architecture Network has hosted a number of recent meet ups aimed at educating talented people across a range of new technologies and technical areas. This time we’re looking at something much more important, the people. In particular it will focus on how you can get the best from the Architects in your business and how they can deliver the best results to you.

It will look at the age old debate which always exists in this field between art and science, the creative vs. the coder. What types of projects require what types of people and how do you get the best results from such a diverse range of individuals.
