Where are you from? I’m
originally from the Midwest and now live in the lovely Pacific Northwest.
Tell us your latest news? One Scandalous Kiss, the first book in my new Accidental Heirs series from
Avon Impulse came out on September 8th!
When and why did you begin writing? I think the why has to do with those stories and
characters swirling around in the heads of all writers. They want their stories
told, and I have a craving to tell them.
As to the when, I’ve been writing since
I was kid. I can remember writing stories on my mom’s steno notepads and then
on the big green Hermes typewriter we had at home. I let my writing get
sidetracked for many years, but I got serious about it again in the last few
years.
When did you first consider yourself a writer? I’ve considered myself a writer for a long time, but I
didn’t have the courage to say it aloud to others until I published my first
book in 2014. However, I don’t advocate that approach. I had it wrong. Youngsters
and teens and storytellers of any age should find the courage to call
themselves “writer.”
What inspired you to write your first book? My first book was a quite short novella, Scandalous Wager, and the story,
characters, and setting came to me in a kind of inspired flash. I wrote it
fairly quickly, and it’s now a story I wish I’d spent more time on and
developed a bit more.
Do you have a specific writing style? I think voice is the hardest thing for a writer to
define, especially about themselves. I try to write relatable, interesting
characters, emotionally satisfying romances, and I’ve been told my writing has
a bit of humor to it.
How did you come up with the title? My current release, One
Scandalous Kiss, was originally titled The
Worth of a Kiss. I like my current title much better and am grateful for a
clever editor who helped me come up with it. The original title was taken from
a line in Percy Shelley’s poem called “Love’s Philosophy” that features in a
key scene in the book.
Is there a message in your novel that you want
readers to grasp? I think the theme or message of One Scandalous Kiss is to trust oneself
and to trust in love. Both the hero and heroine have to learn to trust their
own abilities, good judgement, and their love for each other before they can be
together.
How much of the book is realistic? I hope the characters are realistic, with hopes and fears
and some virtues and a few flaws, just like all of us. My favorite romances are
those where I fall in love with the hero and want to be friends with the
heroine. Those are the kinds of stories I aim to write.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events
in your own life? I think some aspects of the hero
and heroine’s desire to please their fathers is something I can relate to, and
I’ve always fantasized about owning a bookstore. However, most of the story is
the stuff of my chaotic writer’s mind. J
What books have most influenced your life most? Reading Jane Austen’s Pride
and Prejudice as a teenager changed my life. After that, I only wanted to
write stories with happy endings.
If you had to choose, which writer would you
consider a mentor? Jane Austen made me want to
write romance, but I would say Lisa Kleypas, as far as modern authors go, has
had the biggest influence on me as a writer.
What book are you reading now? I always have several books on the go! I’m reading The Titled Americans by Elisabeth Kehoe,
the non-fiction story of American heiresses who married titled Brits in the mid
to late 1800s. I’m also reading a review copy of the historical mystery A Study in Death by Anna Lee Huber and a
Regency romance, The Maddening Lord
Montwood by Vivienne Lorret.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your
interest? I just read The Likelihood of Lucy by Jenny Holiday and really enjoyed it. Her
heroine in the novel is a great advocate of author and philosopher Mary
Wollstonecraft, and my heroine in One
Scandalous Kiss expounds her views too.
What are your current projects? I’m putting finishing touches on One Tempting Proposal, the second book in my Accidental Heirs
series, and I’m getting to work on book three.
What would you like my readers to know? At the risk of sounding sappy, I truly appreciate
everyone who takes a chance on me as an author and reads my books. Writers
create stories and characters, but they only truly flourish in the hearts and minds
of readers.
