While there is always more work to do in today’s changing environment, here are some of the ways we strive for safety, stewardship, and sustainability.
We strive to reduce our carbon footprint by replacing outdated and inefficient equipment and lighting, such as installing on-demand charging stations and switching to LED bulbs in our warehouses. We make a conscious effort to seek sustainable and durable materials to provide you with quality products designed to last, like the sustainably harvested forest lumber used in our exclusive Stanhope mattresses foundation.
We are committed to the health and safety of our customers. We actively avoid known toxic chemicals in the furniture industry. We are expanding and evolving our assortment of products that contribute a lower environmental impact, like water-based lacquers and vegan leather. To help our customers make informed purchases, we seek third-party certifications.
We promote social equity in our supply chain. When our supply chain is empowered, their families and communities are too. Our valued employees and partners are paid a living wage. Our partners meet or exceed local health and safety codes, and we took the extra step to become CTPAT certified (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism). We are committed to training those within our reach about the importance of sustainability, such as promoting educational webinars for employees and attending sustainability-focused networking groups.
As a major multi-channel retailer, we are challenged to reduce waste whenever possible. Skilled furniture repair technicians provide essential services to keep our furniture out of landfills. At our corporate office, samples are repurposed for charity auctions. To reduce paper consumption, we converted to digital catalogs and passionately encourage our customers to sign up for paperless billing.
Water is vital to the success of our business operations, from our supply chain to our stores. Our wastewater is properly treated, and we mitigate pollution as much as possible. Cube reduction in overseas shipping is always a priority for us, which in turn reduces ocean pollution caused by international vessels.
We embrace the philosophy that extending a product’s life is the best way to avoid the landfill. Thoughtful consideration is given to every item in our lineup, from raw material to assembly, packaging, disassembly, and discontinuation. Our Mulberry warehouse is a raw material supplier to a local energy company. Through this partnership, we have recycled tons of cardboard, foam, plastic, and wood into clean, alternative fuel used to produce concrete.
We are committed to the responsible use of forest resources, including the wood used in our furniture. We do not want to inadvertently contribute to deforestation, which is why over 70% of our wood furniture assortment is responsibly sourced from tree farms, is certified sustainable, and/or contains reclaimed/recycled components. Furthermore, over 25% of our wood furniture assortment is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and/or contains reclaimed/recycled components. We will work with our suppliers on an ongoing basis to eliminate wood from unacceptable sources and to progressively increase the amount of responsible wood - wood from certified and recycled/reclaimed sources - procured over time.
We recognize the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as an important tool to promote responsible forest management. We have a preference for sourcing FSC-certified wood furniture when it meets our requirements. We are also firmly committed to avoiding wood from unacceptable sources, including:
