I'm a fan of the classic space sets from the '70s and '80s. The blue and grey ships with the yellow windscreens piloted by the always-smiling astronauts in spacesuits of solid primary colors have such an iconic and recognizable look, it’s hard not to feel like a kid when looking at the classic space sets. Unfortunately, since those days of Lego were 30 some years ago, it’s hard to come across any classic space stuff (for a low price). Lego has made sets like Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! and the Exo-Suit, which both had wonderful retro space vibes going on, but it’s not often that it's an entire set that's reminiscent of classic space, it's usually just a minifigure or the classic space logo somewhere.

That is where the LL960 Supernova comes in. It has the blue body with grey wings and the yellow windscreen. It has the classic astronauts. It has the black and yellow stripe on the wings. This is a classic spaceship. But it’s also a new spaceship. It utilizes modern building techniques like Studs Not On Top. Its design is sleek and smooth instead of big and blocky. It uses newer Lego elements to achieve what couldn’t be dreamed of in the era of classic space. Or really, it could be dreamed of, only we can actually build it now.

It took me one rainy day to design the LL960 Supernova. The ship uses 591 pieces and holds two classic astronauts. It is also swooshable. Swooshability is important.

I also have a Flickr page if you'd like to see more things I've built.
