A Sumner County family is counting its blessings tonight in the face of tragedy.

One year ago this month, David Bangean of Gallatin was preparing for his junior year at Tennessee Tech when he suffered a rare spinal stoke. Blood supply to his spinal cord was cut off, leaving the electrical engineering student paralyzed from the neck down. He went from playing volleyball to needing a ventilator to breathe for him in a matter of minutes.

After months of rehab in Atlanta, Bangean is back in Gallatin. His family was forced to sell their home because there was no room to care for him. Thanks to a donated lot from the developers of a neighborhood called Fairway Farms off Long Hollow Pike, the family is in the process of building a new home, one that will make it easier for them to care for David who requires around the clock care.

The home is beginning to take shape, but how the Bangean’s will be able to finish it out will depend on what they can afford.

Tuesday night, family and friends hosted a fundraiser at Bagsby Ranch in Gallatin. The money raised will be used for David’s care. His parents, Vasile and Angelica Bangean tell FOX 17 News they are overwhelmed by support from people they don’t even know.

“We’re so surprised and amazed by the support we’re getting from people we don’t even know,” said Vasile Bangean who is holding out hope one day his son will walk again.

If you’d like to help, the Bangean’s chuch is accepting donations. You can send a check to Bethel Romanian Church of God, 585 Harris Lane, Gallatin, TN 37066. There’s also a GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/a-new-home-for-david
