This map shows you what your Manhattan block looked like in 1609

If you live in Manhattan and you've ever been curious about the history of your surroundings (less rent history, more natural history) then you'll probably find this recently released map by the Wildlife Conservation Society fascinating.

In addition to seeing what the topography of Manhattan was like 400 years ago, you can also zero in on specific blocks to see what wildlife you would probably find there. Some, like squirrels, may not be that surprising but you can also find Mountain Lions, Black Bears and Bobcats that were more than just the half-hearted sports mascot of a downtown private university.
