Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Fran Odette

FranPromo

Twenty-seven years ago, moved to a city to go to school.  During that time, I found myself also trying to seek help to leave an emotionally abusive relationship.  I wished that back then, when I was trying to find supports that there was a place like Nellie’s Women’s Shelter, because it provides accessible services to many women, including women with disabilities.

Nellie’s recognizes that there are factors such as poverty, lack of affordable and accessible housing and violence put women and their children at increased risk. I am out of the situation now, thanks to the support of family and friends.  Since returning back to Toronto, I have been working with other survivors and anti-violence workers to address the causes of violence against all women and children.  Participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is another way of giving back.

This is going to be my 2nd year participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The first year I wheeled 5 Km and made it to the finish line in just over 1 hour. This year I will try to complete my second 5 Km in under an hour…watch out here I come!!

Being part of this event gives me the opportunity to give back to Nellies Women’s Shelter and to promote the work that they do to help women and their children.  In the near future, Nellie’s is working with the community to find a new home.  A home that is both physically accessible and inclusive of all women who are striving for a life free from violence.  Please click here to help me support Nellie’s in the Scotia Toronto Waterfront Marathon
