An Interview with the Authors of Dark Secrets: A Paranormal Noir Anthology

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

Suzanne Johnson: I write urban fantasy under this name, and write paranormal romance and romantic suspense under the name Susannah Sandlin. I’m a displaced New Orleanian, so you’ll find New Orleans or south Louisiana in a lot of my books, no matter what genre I’m writing!

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Suzanne Johnson: DARK SECRETS is an anthology of six all-new novellas from six authors of paranormal fiction—Rachel Caine, Cynthia Eden, Megan Hart, Jeffe Kennedy, Mina Khan and myself. Our theme is “paranormal noir,” and it was up to each of us to interpret exactly what that meant. It’s a fun book because each of the stories is VERY different!

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Megan Hart: NEVER OF COURSE NOT WHO WOULD DO SUCH A THING THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE CRAZY. Ahem. I like to say, all of it is fiction and all of it is true!

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Suzanne Johnson: I still have a full-time day job (also writing and editing) so spare time is at a premium. But I try to do some type of art every day. I do mixed-media art journaling. I’m not very good at it, but it’s fun and therapeutic and uses a non-writing part of my brain.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

Mina Khan: I wish I had written every single book that Rachel Caine writes. I love her stories and her writing.

Rachel Caine: Well, there are so many in the YA category I'd love to have written, like Holly Black’s Curseworkers series, and Libba Bray’s Diviners series! Brilliant stuff. I just love the depth and incredible craft that they put into those books.

Jeffe Kennedy: JD Robb’s In Death series or Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. Love both—so brilliant and satisfying.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Mina Khan: Steampunk! I love reading in the genre and would love to write a steampunk story one day.

Rachel Caine: I'd love to give straight suspense/thriller a whirl, because I love to read it. Also, some historical mystery!

Suzanne Johnson: I’m writing a lot of romantic suspense and romantic thrillers now, but I’d also like to write a straight suspense/thriller novel without the romance (travesty!).

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Megan Hart: I'm fairly partial to the devil in Ride with the Devil and Dance with the Devil. :) (Note: Dance with the Devil is in the Dark Secrets anthology.)

Suzanne Johnson: The early 19th-century New Orleans pirate Jean Lafitte is, in his immortal, undead form, a character in my Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy series, and he’s SO much fun to write. I try to keep his character pretty close to the historical Lafitte, and he was smart, sneaky, and sexy.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Jeffe Kennedy: I have more books in my Twelve Kingdoms series coming up. The trilogy ended with THE TALON OF THE HAWK, but I have at least two more books coming in the next phase, The Uncharted Realms. The first book in The Uncharted Realms is THE PAGES OF THE MIND, out May 31, 2016. Before that will be a novella that bridges the events in the aftermath of The Twelve Kingdoms trilogy to the beginning of The Uncharted Realms books.
Suzanne Johnson: I have a new novella about Jean Lafitte, PIRATESHIP DOWN, coming out as part of a story collection coming out in November. My new romantic suspense series as Susannah Sandlin, about a group of South Louisiana wildlife officers, starts next spring with WILD MAN’S BLUFF.
