The Chapel, Trinity College Dublin

with
Resurgam
Mark Duley: director / Jörg Jacobi: harpsichord and organ
Israel Golani: theorbo / Sarah Groser: violone / Carina Drury: cello

Resurgam celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by offering a glimpse of the cultural landscape created by this seismic event in our history. A mini-series of three concerts explores the musical legacy of the chorales of Martin Luther, in particular in Baroque music directly inspired by and based on them. These hymns were revolutionary in allowing the congregation to participate rather than merely listen; their superbly crafted tunes, together with the theologically rich texts they set, have inspired composers ever since.

The three concerts follow very broadly the shape of the principal Lutheran liturgy, and the church year as it relates to the Christian/human life cycle (birth – life and death – eternity). The centrepiece of every concert is one of the Liedmasses by Georg Philipp Telemann, each based upon a chorale by Martin Luther.

Saturday 11th February: Birth (Christmas & Epiphany)
Telemann Missa super Ein Kindelein so löbelich; Motets by composers from Saxony and Thuringia; JS Bach Lobet den Herrn alle Heiden; Organ works by Buxtehude and Pachelbel

Wednesday 15th February: Life and Death (Passiontide and Easter)
Telemann Missa super Christ lag in Todesbanden; Cantatas on the same chorale by JS Bach and Johann Kuhnau (Bach’s predecessor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig); Organ works by Bach and Kuhnau

Saturday 18th February: Eternity (Trinity and the end of the Church year)
Telemann Missa super Es wolle Gottuns gnädig sein; Motets Jesu meine Freude by JS Bach and Johann Friedrich Doles, Bach’s successor at the Thomaskirche; Organ works by Bach

Resurgam makes a unique and distinctive contribution to Ireland’s musical life, and is widely acknowledged to be one of the country’s most accomplished vocal ensembles. The choir was established in 2003 and is a project-based ensemble of up to 32 voices comprising some of Ireland’s finest choral singers. A particular feature of the choir’s work is the presentation of the great sacred repertoire of the renaissance and baroque periods. Resurgam has performed in many venues throughout Ireland and also in the UK, and has featured in several major Irish festivals, including the Cork International Choral Festival, Ardee Baroque, Galway Early Music Festival, Kilkenny Festival and Galway International Arts Festival. The choir has worked with many internationally renowned conductors, including Christophe Rousset, Laurence Cummings, Christian Curnyn and Gary Cooper, as well as its own founder-director Mark Duley.  Recent projects include concert performances of Mozart’s Idomeneo at Kilkenny Arts Festival; a semi-stage production of Rossi’s Orfeo at the Galway International Arts Festival; Vespri - a series featuring Psalm settings from the 17th Century; Slava! - Music from the Russian Orthodox Tradition; Sagittarius - The music of Schutz; St Matthew Passion; Gabrieli Series; Nunc Dimittis - Songs of Farewell; Mondonville and Handel with Christophe Rousset and the Irish Baroque Orchestra. In 2017 Resurgam will mark the Reformation Quincentennial with a number of projects focusing on settings of texts by Martin Luther. Luther500 will take place over 3 concerts in February and Das Lutherische Schloß featuring music by Altenburg, Scheidt and Praetorius in June.
