‘The Revenant’ Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy Face Off in New Footage

Leonardo DiCaprio is out for blood in the first official trailer for “The Revenant.”

Unlike the previous dialogue-free teaser, the new, jaw-dropping trailer reveals more of the backstory behind DiCaprio’s character, explorer Hugh Glass, and his conflict with Hardy’s character, his confidant-turned-enemy John Fitzgerald.

The film — already an Oscar contender — explores every major type of literary conflict as DiCaprio battles man, nature, society and self after he’s brutally attacked by a bear in the American wilderness and left for dead by his hunting crew. DiCaprio vows revenge against Hardy after he buries him alive and kills his son.

“We did what we had to do,” Hardy lies to the leader of their fur trapping group (Domhnall Gleeson). “He was buried right.”

Glass embarks on an unparalleled journey, ultimately traveling more than 200 miles through a winter storm to seek redemption.

The survival drama teams DiCaprio with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Inarritu, who also co-wrote the film based on Michael Punke’s novel. The period epic (set in the early 19th century) was shot entirely in natural light by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.
