The Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) would like to invite you to the Inaugural John Pearce Memorial Lecture and the launch of the Social Enterprise Collection (Scotland).

The lecture will look at the roots and origins of social enterprise - both in Scotland and internationally - and reflect on where it appears to be heading. This event is also a way of celebrating the end of CBS Network - a not-for-profit company that was formed in 1983 and supported social and community enterprise in Scotland and internationally. They closed on 31st March 2015.

John Pearce (1942-2011)

John Pearce, who died from cancer aged just 69, was a major and influential force in community development and in particular was a pioneer in community enterprise - the precursor to social enterprise. For nearly fifty years, John‘s ideas, inspiration and talent for clear thinking were a driving force behind people-centred development and especially around the principles and practice of collective and community enterprise. He wrote extensively throughout his working life with an insight well-illustrated in his seminal work: Social Enterprise in Anytown (2003). He was a thinker who managed to turn theories into practice and directly helped the development of communities in Scotland, the UK and wider afield.

Willy Roe, Chair, British Council Scotland

Throughout his working life Willy Roe has maintained an interest in social and community enterprise and helped found the Centre for Employment Initiatives in the 1980s. He established Rocket Science as a social and economic consultancy company and combined this with an active public life including serving on the boards of Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Department for Works and Pensions. He knew John Pearce and since the 1980s has been aware of John’s life and work. Willy Roe is currently the Chair of the British Council Scotland and was awarded a CBE in 2010 in recognition of his public service.
