Watch the new trailer for the made-in-Birmingham movie 'Woodlawn'

The made-in-Birmingham movie "Woodlawn" opens in theaters nationwide on Oct. 16, but you can catch a glimpse of the film in a new trailer released by the film production company.

Much of the movie takes places in Birmingham in 1973, when a spiritual movement swept through Woodlawn High School, uniting the school and the football team and inspiring its star player, running back Tony Nathan.

"Woodlawn" also depicts the historic 1974 Banks-Woodlawn football game, at which an estimated 42,000 fans crowded into Legion Field to not only see a clash between two of the city's football powerhouses but also two of the most celebrated high-school players in Birmingham's history - Woodlawn's Nathan and Banks quarterback Jeff Rutledge, who later became teammates at the University of Alabama.

The movie was shot on locations in and around Birmingham last fall, and the filmmakers spent several nights filming at Legion Field.

Former Briarwood Christian School and Alabama football player Caleb Castille stars as Nathan, and the rest of the cast includes Richard Kohnke as Rutledge, Nic Bishop as Woodlawn coach Tandy Geralds, C. Thomas Howell as Banks coach George "Shorty" White, and Jon Voight as Crimson Tide coaching legend Paul "Bear" Bryant.

"Woodlawn" was written and directed by Birmingham filmmakers Jon and Andrew Erwin, whose previous films include "October Baby" and "Moms' Night Out," and whose father, Hank Erwin, was the chaplain for Woodlawn football team in the 1970s. Sean Astin portrays Hank Erwin in the movie.
