This May, Portland, Oregon was graced with its first ever all-vegan doughnut shop, and fans of the chain have been loudly singing its praises ever since.

The joint brainchild of wonder women Carly Sitner and Crystal Wegener, Doe Donuts is known for its innovative flavors and massive selection of deep-fried pastry goodness. In fact, Doe customers can try 13-14 new vegan flavors per day, including staple gems like “The Golden Child” (their signature chocolate raised doughnut with ganache, brownie, chocolate shavings, chocolate chips, and edible gold pearls) and the “All or Nothing” (which features cookie butter filling, chocolate ganache, and raw chocolate chip cookie dough).

“We are a living, breathing example of just how delicious plant-based eating can be,” Sitner and Wegener told One Green Planet.

Sitner and Wegener initially started working together in a popular natural grocery chain and decided to serve fresh, vegan doughnuts in order to seek out their local competition. Between Sitner, a vegan for 17 years and a professional baker for 13, and Wegener, a graduate of the Oregon Culinary Institute with a degree in baking and pastry management, Doe soon rose to prominence and found its rightful place in Portland’s spanning foodscape.

“Portland has such a huge, vibrant and loving food scene… From baked potato carts to restaurants that only serve churros, it seems as if everything has been done and copied twice over. For us to be able to say we are the first and only vegan donut shop is exciting and important,” Sitner and Wegener told One Green Planet.

Of course, with so many interesting flavors to try, it’s no wonder Doe has been attracting all sorts of new and curious customers looking to satisfy their sweet tooths —Sitner and Wegener estimate that half of their clients aren’t vegan. Rather, Doe caters to anybody who wants to indulge in delicious, fun food.

“We estimate that a larger percentage of our customers are not vegan, and half of them don’t even know our donuts are vegan and both parties keep coming back. If we can get traditional eaters excited and talking about food that is also vegan, then we’ve done our job.”

Just one looks at the company’s Yelp page shows that people are wholeheartedly getting on board with the message and enjoying the vegan goodness.

“I don’t even like donuts and my friend brought me donuts twice and I literally had tears of joy running down my face,” said Natasha S.

As for the co-owners, they have a couple of varieties to recommend for first-time visitors to the shop:

“Our French Toast donut is one of our most popular. We make actual french toast from scratch and transform that into a glaze. So your donut literally has french toast on it! Our Salted Vanilla Bean is a classic that has gained more popularity as time goes on. We use fair trade vanilla in the glaze and the topped is sprinkled with a vanilla bean sea salt that we mix in-house.”

“Vegan Doughnuts are by far one of the most searched recipes on the Food Monster App – they are all the rage right now,” One Green Planet co-founder, Preeta Sinha, says. You can find everything from gluten-free Unicorn Sushi Doughnuts to Narwhal Cake Doughnuts, and beyond.

“I remember people would tell me getting a good vegan doughnut that was soft, fluffy and tender on the inside was almost impossible. Not anymore,” Preeta added.
