Sidewalk Film Festival 2015 announces winners; here's the list

"Krisha," an unsettling family drama about a woman with a history of mental illness and substance abuse, and "T-Rex," the inspirational story of female Olympic boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields, won the top jury prizes at Birmingham's  17th annual Sidewalk Film Festival.

"Krisha" won the award for best narrative feature, "T-Rex" won for best documentary feature. Both awards come with $1,000 cash prizes.

The independent film festival -- which showcased about 250 features, documentaries and shorts at the Alabama Theatre and other venues throughout downtown Birmingham -- opened Friday night with a screening of "Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made" and closed with Sunday night's awards show.

Two films by Alabama filmmakers were the top winners in the audience choice awards.

"Revival: The Sam Bush Story," a documentary about bluegrass legend Sam Bush co-directed by Birmingham filmmaker Wayne Franklin and Kris Wheeler, was the audience choice winner for best documentary, as well as best Alabama film.

The horror-comedy "For a Few Zombies More," co-directed by Birmingham's Chance Shirley and Chuck Hartsell, was the audience pick for best narrative feature.

"Henry Gamble's Birthday Party," a drama about a young gay man's 17th birthday celebration, won both the jury award and the audience choice award for best narrative feature in the SHOUT Film Festival, a Sidewalk companion festival that showcases films about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.
