FORMER CHAMPS SHINE

You  can’t just simply remove a former champion from  the equation.

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Booters learned that the hard way when they got waylaid by former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s football champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 4-1, yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.

The UV Green Booters started on a high note and scored the game’s first goal courtesy of Christian Pongase early in the first half.

But the Jaguars, champions in the 2012 season of the Cesafi, showcased their championship pedigree immediately and retaliated with two straight goals courtesy of Alemark Jumapit (44th and 48th minute). The Jaguars didn’t let up in the second half as Eugene Vicente and Neil Ryant Miñoza scored goals in the 71st and 73rd minute, respectively, to peg the final score.

USJ-R remained the leading team in the collegiate division with nine points coming off three wins.

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, meanwhile, secured second place in the standings with seven points after earning a 1-0 win against last year’s runner-up University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers yesterday.

UC’s ace striker Nigerian Famous Ene Azibataran had an off-day but Vic Jasond Midyer Felicilda managed to carry the team to victory by scoring the winning goal in the 45th minute.

Famous had three attempts but didn’t make one as he was heavily guarded by USP-F’s defenders.

UV remained at third place in the collegiate standings with four points followed by USP-F and USC at fourth and fifth places, respectively. USC and USP-F have not won a single match in the tournament so far.

In the secondary division, defending champion Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves bounced back from a close loss to Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) last Saturday by humiliating the USP-F Baby Panthers, 5-0, yesterday.

SHS-AdC continued its winning streak by crushing USJ-R, 7-0.

DBTC and SHS-AdC both now have nine points after earning three points each for their respective wins but the former leads the current standings by accumulating a higher goal quotient.

Rounding off the top three in the standings is USC-BED, which has three points.
