As the saying goes, music can soothe the most savage beast, but now it can also save water.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California announced Friday it is turning to music as a way of encouraging people to conserve water during the state’s continuing drought, by creating an Internet radio station that offers five-minute songs for people to time their showers.

The “Water Lovers Station” on Pandora and Spanish-language Uforia streaming-music services will offer a variety of tunes — many with water or rain themes, that people can use to time their showers.

“Someone can pick their favorite song from the list, press play, turn on the shower and finish before the song ends,” MWD General Manager Jeffrey Kightlinger said. “Whether you use the songs to time your shower or to listen at work, we are hoping this list will be a fun way to keep the importance of water conservation top of mind.”

The Pandora Internet radio playlist includes about 100 songs, including Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.”

To access the playlist, Pandora users should search for “Water Lovers Playlist” in the create-a-station box.
