Position Description

The Office of Economic Development (OED) is a Mayor's Executive Office, responsible for assisting the Mayor and City Council develop, analyze and implement policies and programs that support the City's economic development agenda.  This agenda encompasses OED programs that support local talent development, provide business technical assistance and financing opportunities, and develop policies supportive of key industry sectors.  These programs include, but are not limited to, the work of the Office of Film + Music, Only in Seattle neighborhood business district program, GrowSeattle business retention and expansion program, and Startup Seattle.
 
Within this office, we seek an Economic Intelligence Advisor as part of a newly expanded team dedicated to policy and advocacy in our key industry sectors.  The Economic Intelligence Advisor is a new position, driving the collection and analysis of economic and competitive intelligence.  These activities inform policy recommendations, as well as support the recruitment of talent and businesses through data-driven story-telling

Job Responsibilities

You will be successful if you feel passionate about:

  • Telling a compelling story about Seattle's economy through effective benchmarking of key sectors, analysis of economic indicators, and city-to-city comparisons
  • With an economic development lens, advising relevant City departments on policies/programs/planning (e.g. education, housing, transportation, planning, neighborhoods, arts/culture, film/music)
  • Working with industry advocates and parsing through news sources, financials and economic reports to call out key trends, and advise the Mayor's Office on policy recommendations
  • Maintain and produce primary data materials (e.g. OED Economic Indicators) and gather/share secondary source materials (e.g. real estate market reports)
 
Your effectiveness in this role will depend on your ability to:
  • Work on a cross-functional team in addition to internal and external stakeholders
  • Exhibit both intellectual curiosity and ownership in a newly-created position
  • Build and maintain new, comprehensive intelligence dashboard and annual Seattle economic indicators
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing in a political environment
 
You will feel prepared to take on this role if you have experience in:
  • Leading market research and conducting economic analysis and surveys
  • Communicating with executives in both the private and public sectors
  • Presenting data that is both compelling and easily understood

Qualifications

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):

  • A bachelor's degree (arts or sciences)
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, professional services or agency environments
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to work with diverse cultural, business and technical groups
  • Understanding of key economic success factors and ability to analyze and communicate trends

Additional Information
