Just as the way we watch what we watch is different from 10 years, so are the people responsible for its content. There are more women now holding key positions in media platforms than ever before. In the next See Jane Salon you will hear from industry leaders, content creators and show runners on how their presence is giving entertainment a new look and where the best opportunities will be for women.

PANELIST BIOS

Julie Ann Crommett, Moderator

Program Manager, CS Education in Media, Google

Julie Ann Crommett joined Google in December 2013 and is currently the Program Manager, CS Education in Media, working to shift perceptions of computer science in mainstream media so as to encourage more diversity in the field.

Previously, she was at NBC Universal where she was responsible for behind-the-camera diversity initiatives including the NBCU Directing Fellowship Program and Writers on the Verge. Throughout her time in Hollywood, Julie Ann initiated a cross-company Hispanic episode of NBC’s Grimm, was an Entertainment Associate at Universal Cable Productions, an associate producer on the Animal Planet series, I’m Alive and a production intern in DVD/Promotions at Pixar Animation Studios. Julie Ann is originally from Atlanta, Ga., via San Juan, Puerto Rico (Cuban too!), and graduated with a B.A. degree in English and American literature from Harvard University.

Anna Akana

Actor and Filmmaker

Anna Akana is an actress and filmmaker with 1.3 million subscribers on youtube. As an actress, you can see her in the recent films Ant-Man, Hello, My Name is Doris, or in Comedy Central’s Broken People.

Terry City

Vice President of Brand Strategy, BuzzFeed

Terry City is the Vice President of Brand Strategy for BuzzFeed where he oversees sales and strategy for Entertainment. He works with Hollywood’s top movie studios and TV networks includuing NBC Universal, Fox, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate, Warner Bros and Netflix. He is also the co-founder and CEO of Steel Titan Productions which recently co-produced the Emmy Award winning ESPN 30 for 30 Film, Playing for the Mob. Terry is veteran of the entertainment and digital media world whose prior experience includes holding key executive roles at The Huffington Post, Yahoo, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

Kathleen Grace

Chief Creative Officer, New Form Digital

Kathleen Grace is chief creative officer at New Form Digital, the only data-driven digital studio focused on scripted mobile-friendly content. Grace is charged with driving the next generation digital studio’s mission to develop high-quality, scripted and unscripted programming for today’s digital audiences. Given her background as a creator, Grace is uniquely suited to the role of developing creative production and distribution opportunities for today’s emerging digital talent.

Before assuming her current leadership role at New Form in 2014, Grace served as head of creative development for YouTubeSpace LA, a studio dedicated to YouTube content creators and collaboration. While at YouTube, Grace was the driving force behind the concept, build out and development of the company’s YouTube Space initiative, establishing studios in London, Tokyo, Los Angeles and New York.

Prior to joining YouTube, she was vice president of production and programming at Next New Networks, which was acquired by YouTube in 2011. In this capacity, she oversaw the production of original series and spearheaded work with emerging online talent. Grace has also created several notable web series as an independent producer, including the critically acclaimed The Burg and Vuguru’s mockumentary The All for Nots. Grace attended McGill University and is based in Los Angeles, California.

Deborah Snyder

Producer

Deborah Snyder develops and produces visually arresting films that are both thought provoking and entertaining. Bringing a unique, consumer-minded vision to each project she takes on, Snyder is heavily involved with the creative marketing and advertising strategy behind her films, applying her previous experience in the advertising industry.  As Co-President of Cruel & Unusual Films, formed with her producing partner Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder stands among the top producers in the entertainment industry. 

Up next Snyder is producing the highly anticipated Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams. The DC Comics superhero film will be released by Warner Bros in March 2016, and is a follow-up to Man of Steel, which Snyder also produced alongside Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan. That film was released by Warner Bros. in June 2013 and earned over $650 million at the worldwide box office.

Snyder is also an executive producer on David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad, starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman and Margot Robbie. Warner Bros. will release the film, based on supervillains, in August 2016. Additionally she is a producer on Wonder Woman, currently in pre-production starring Gal Gadot.

Snyder most recently produced the blockbuster 300: Rise of an Empire, directed by Noam Murro from a script co-written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. The film, which was released by Warner Bros. in March of 2014, is the sequel the 2007 film 300, which her company produced and was written and directed by Zack Snyder.

Snyder previously produced Warner Bros.’ Sucker Punch, an action fantasy that follows a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality; the film, written and directed by Zack Snyder, opened in March 2011. In addition, she is presently developing a wide range of projects under the Cruel & Unusual banner, including: The Last Photograph, with a story by Zack Snyder and screenplay by Kurt Johnstad; Army of the Dead, an action-thriller written by Joby Harold, from an original story by Zack Snyder; and Illusions, based on the novel by Richard Bach.

Snyder made her producing debut as an executive producer on the worldwide hit feature 300, inspired by the Frank Miller graphic novel and directed by Zack Snyder.  A breakout success, 300 took in more than $70 million at the box office in its opening weekend and went on to gross over $450 million worldwide.  Snyder then produced Zack Snyder’s critically acclaimed Watchmen, the long-awaited adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, and executive produced the animated adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
