Sonoma Grill opens in downtown Riverhead (Credit: Monique Singh-Roy)

The resurgence of Riverhead continues with the opening of the latest downtown restaurant, Sonoma Grill.

The new eatery is located at 300 E. Main St., which is the former home of The Riverhead Project. Owners Matt Demar and John Cestare also own a restaurant by the same name in Holtsville.

Sonoma Grill is described as a family-style restaurant. Burgers, wraps, pastas and homemade pizzas are the main attractions here.

“Everything is fresh,” said manager Tim Pintauro. “We’ll use local ingredients and everything will be made in-house from scratch, including the pastas, pizzas and salads.”

Outdoor dining, as well as live music, are planned for the patio. The restaurant’s bar will serve 15-ounce specialty drinks the size of small fishbowls. In the middle of the restaurant is a separate room, enclosed on three sides that will serve as a lounge with high top chairs and tables.

Some of the restaurant’s attractions will include Las Vegas-style drinks with dry ice, wraps made with pizza dough instead of tortillas and a dessert called the Kitchen Sink Sundae, which is an enormous ice cream sundae the entire family can eat together. For brunch, get ready to enjoy decadent dishes like red velvet pancakes, Rice Krispies pancakes as well as chicken and waffles.

Pintauro and company are excited about making the move to Riverhead.

“It’s up and coming, a lot of businesses are coming out here,” he said. “PeraBell is already here and they wouldn’t be here if this town wasn’t going to be successful.”

Sonoma Grill opens officially for dinner at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29. It will be open for brunch both Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. The owners are expecting to begin serving lunch later in September.
