All businesses have a goal of being successful, and success rarely comes overnight and never without a lot of effort.

But if you look at high-performing companies, you will find they all have things in common that can guide the decision you make. Here are some:

Culture of high performance. Expectations are high, and employees are very engaged. Values, rewards and incentives are a part of the culture.

Teamwork. Emphasis on working together and a team-oriented staff is the hallmark of the business.

Goal oriented. Setting and attaining goals that are jointly agreed upon by employees and managers is primary. All employees know the purpose and are committed to it.

Self-motivated staff. Hiring self-starters and rewarding them will make managers’ jobs much easier.

Sense of urgency. Procrastination is the enemy of sales. An inherent sense is essential for success.

Passionate. Caring about the company and its customers is an important element for success.

Problem solving. A commitment to solving problems and addressing issues by management and involving staff members will go a long way in avoiding apathy.

Competitive. A strong desire to win when measured against goals or other competitors is a great motivator and drives success.

Disciplined. Being organized and following a system even when success has been attained will keep the focus on top performance.

Focus on training and development. Ensuring new hire training and continuous training and development of all staff members in order to stay up to date on processes and trends will pay dividends. Providing tools needed will help employees to perform better.

Competency. Hiring and maintaining a competent staff in all areas — such as sales, marketing, product development and operations — will ensure ongoing effectiveness and efficiency. It will keep the company on track and exceeding expectations.

Embrace change. Employees who see change as a resource, as an opportunity to test assumptions and evaluate the situations, will add to the collective knowledge and grow the business.

A business or other organization that is high performing will be made up of people who have solid and deep trust in each other and in the mission of the team. They will feel free to express feelings and ideas. All are working united toward the same goals and are committed to working together to attain success. Nothing beats the excitement that comes with a company running on all cylinders, doing what it is designed to do with people who love their jobs.
