Description

Designed by Terry Blumer and Stephanie Hargrave

Beeswax has a natural beauty to it. It can be opaque or transparent, mysterious or straight forward, luminous, rich, or intriguing. We are using it in a manner that creates a sense of depth, and draws the viewer in. Surface quality is crucial to our design idea as we layer and fuse the wax, which, after cooling, is polished to a natural sheen. Our aim is to encourage viewers to explore the piece from afar, up close, and from many different angles, akin to how one explores areas of the universe. We feel that the visual depth that can be achieved with encaustics speaks to the infinite depth of the universe, and much like the universe, encaustic work visually rewards, delights and reveals more each time it is viewed. It too, inspires curiosity and discovery. By coating the astronaut with dark wax and light tiny ‘stars’ and galaxies, tethered together thoughtfully with design embellishments, it represents humankind’s inherent drive to learn and explore. We encourage viewers to move around the sculpture as they explore and make discoveries of their own.
