The Bronx Pyramid

The Bronx Pyramid

On his debut album, Bronx-born bassist/composer and longtime Wynton Marsalis accompanist Carlos Henriquez bumps Afro-Cuban jazz influences up against a bebop sensibility. Most of the album is defined by a sumptuous Latin jazz sound, except when he detours into some straight-up salsa for “Descarga Entre Amigos,” with guest singer Rubén Blades. Sometimes bop is on top, as on the madly swinging “Guarajazz,” and sometimes percolating Latin percussion comes to the fore (“Cuchifrito”), but Henriquez’s fluid, propulsive bass work is always at the core.
