Hull College Accounting Professor Recognized for Teaching Excellence

Susan Murray, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting in the Hull College of Business Knox School of Accountancy, received this year’s Augusta University Individual Teaching Excellence Award.

The Augusta University Individual Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a faculty member who is strongly committed to teaching and learning, uses effective teaching strategies to enhance student learning, and has a strong commitment to fostering the academic success of students by interacting with them outside the classroom.

Hull College Dean Richard Franza, Ph.D., said Murray is a deserving winner of the excellence award.

“She is deeply committed to a student-centered learning experience, both in and out of the classroom. Her commitment to continuous learning of new information and how to present it to her students is outstanding and infectious,” said Franza.

Murray joined the Hull College from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where she served as an accounting faculty member for five years. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D. in Accounting from Texas Tech University and beginning her academic career, Murray obtained her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas-Austin and joined the Navy as a Watch Officer through the ROTC program.

Upon completing her military career, she earned a Master of Business Administration from Hawaii Pacific University in 1995 and spent the next few years pursuing a professional accounting career in The Netherlands.

Murray is a Certified Public Accountant in Georgia and holds other professional certifications, such as Certified Financial Manager, Certified Management Accountant, and Certified Global Management Accountant.

“I am incredibly honored by this recognition. Thank you to Dr. Mike Dugan for the nomination and to the Center for Instructional Innovation for all you do to help us be successful. To be recognized by my peers for work on something as important as teaching and student success is very special,” Murray said.

The Augusta University Teaching Excellence Awards not only recognize the excellence of its educators, but they also serve to select nominees for the University System of Georgia Regents Teaching Excellence Awards program. In receiving the Individual Teaching Excellence Award, Murray will be the university’s nominee for the Felton Jenkins Jr. Hall of Fame Faculty Award.
