The sixth annual Geekfest took place at Central Texas College’s Killeen Campus this weekend, featuring a variety of science fiction, fantasy, comic book and Japanese animation-themed events.

The festival, which began as a fundraiser for CTC’s Student Ambassador program, has grown each year and now funds several other scholarships. This year’s Geekfest was the college’s largest, expanding from the Mayborn Planetarium to the Student Center and the Anderson Campus Center.

The festival started Friday evening with showings of “The Princess Bride” and “Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the planetarium’s main theater.

Highlights of the festival included a vendor area, appearances by artists, authors and actors, a game room with classic video game consoles and art, baking and costume contests.

Spc. Daniel Navarro, formerly stationed with Fort Hood’s III Corps headquarters, travelled from his current assignment at Goodfellow Air Force Base to participate in Geekfest’s costume contest.

“I’ve been doing this from the start,” he said, as he showed off the features of his Master Chief costume. Master Chief is the main character in the Halo game franchise.

One of the festivals most popular features is the Retro Game Room.

“I had a lot of these systems as a kid, but I ended up getting rid of them,” said Michael Hunter, who hosted the room. “When we started Geekfest, I had an original Xbox and I thought that it would be fun to do something like this, so I started collecting all of these older systems.”

Hunter has hosted the room since the start of Geekfest, and looks forward to returning next year.
