Stakes racing season resumes at Ebro Greyhound Park with the running of the first two rounds of the Mega Morris series in the books, featuring some of the top pups at the track. Four greyhounds enter the next exciting qualifying round undefeated. AJN WE GOING TOO, out of the Ajn Kennel, likes the inside and dominated late in the first two rounds. Shining a light on the Ray Thurber Kennel in this stakes series are littermates CECILY EVANS, RUBY GONZALEZ, and KATIE CREWS, by TRENT LEE and out of AWESOME FLING. This sister trio finished handily in the first two qualifiers.

Of course, the Ray Thurber Kennel is no stranger to the spotlight, as their runners completed the superfecta in Ebro's 2014 Ludy Hess Gold Collar Championship. Just two more rounds left to determine the top puppies to compete in the Mega Morris final set for Saturday, August 15th.

Don't miss the third round action tonight!

The Man Behind the Blog

As a youth, it was all about baseball for George Quinn. Growing up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, his father, a stockbroker, coached the little league finesse pitcher with a mean curve ball and watched him develop in to a high school and college starter. Once, young George attended greyhound races at the now defunct Twin River (Lincoln) track in Lincoln, Rhode Island, but never considered serious involvement in the Sport of Queens.

In 1989, George moved to Miami to study at Barry University and as a walk-on freshman, pitched for the Buccaneers through the 1990 season. An injury ended his playing pursuit, but not involvement in sports. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in Sports Management.

From 1993 through 1995, George served as Director of Ticket Sales for the Montreal Expos when they commenced spring training at West Palm Beach Municipal Stadium. His experience with the Expos lead to a position with Ticket Master as Outlet Coordinator from 1995 through 1997. From 1997 through 2000, he managed CBS Sports.com online merchandising. Now a Hallendale resident, George works at an area warehouse in human resources and accounting.

Bluffs Run Open Recap

Let us make one thing abundantly clear – BOC’S TONY ROMO has incredible bottom. Given that, the 71-pounder, born March 27, 2013 out of FLYING PENSKE X BOC’S SLIM N FIT, had even veteran observers gasping with his come-from-behind triumph in the $60,000 Open at Bluffs Run on Saturday, August 1.

The championship field had seven speed greyhounds and BOC’S TONY ROMO. However, Romo drew the one box and “I was thrilled about that,” Boeckenstedt Kennel trainer Philip Stapleton said. “Getting that one box, at least no one can hit him on the inside. You have to hit him before the first turn. If he can have a clean run, it is impossible to keep him off the ticket.”

While Tony Romo was, as was pretty much usual, breaking last, BARTS BOLD RULER (Bartley Corporation) popped the eight box in impressive style. BARTS BOLD RULER, a 73 pounder, born May 26, 2013 out of PACIFIC MILE X BARTS COMPANION, was a hot greyhound in a hot box. He made the championship race by winning in three of the four qualifying rounds. Also, the eight box was producing on Saturday. The first 11 races of the day saw five winners and two second places come from the eight box.

Mountaineer Marathon Stakes Set for Wheeling Island

Clear The Way Kennel’s TED CRUZ will be going for a stakes distance double when the $10,000 Mountaineer Marathon kicks off Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 11) at Wheeling Island.

In May, TED CRUZ romped to an easy victory in the John Dallas Memorial 3/8 Stakes. In two recent trips on the marathon course, TED CRUZ posted a victory and a third.

The favorite in the stakes event appears to be NAPA KNOW HOW, the versatile A Ray Kennel greyhound. In his first marathon race in July, the youngster won by 9 lengths and nearly broke the track record in the process with a 41.99 clocking. After a third in his next 7/16 start, NAPA KNOW HOW won by 4 ½ lengths in another swift clocking (42.23). The powerhouse has victories in Grade AA 5/16, Grade AA 7/16, and Grade A 3/8 this year.

Making History in the Orange Park Derby

All stakes races are exciting, and the 2015 edition of the $50,000 Orange Park Derby didn't disappoint either, but I doubt if any of us knew just what was going to happen in the 11th race on Saturday evening August 1st at bestbet Jacksonville.

Once again we had a stellar field, you had to win to get in, and two of the greyhounds had won 3 of the 4 qualifying races. Several others had won 2 of the rounds, and we had a good mix of closers, breakers, and stalkers in the mix. It really could have been anyone's game, after some tough post positions were drawn, but sometimes no matter what happens in a race, no matter how hard the others try, the best greyhound is the one that comes out on top at the finish line. And on this occasion, that greyhound made some history and put her name permanently in the record books.

Two Record Breaking Races

It started off as a cloudy and rainy late Friday morning and early afternoon. A lot of the buzz among customers before the races commenced was how much rain the drought-stricken West Palm Beach area would receive. But all that changed in the thirteenth race of the afternoon.

Wearing the yellow and black silk of post position eight, a pup would be going for his third win in a row since returning to Palm Beach from Southland Greyhound Park in West Memphis, Arkansas.

The Greyhound’s name is SPEEDING BULLET (IRUSKA ALL STAR X KENDRA, Janie Carroll Kennel). Going off at odds of less than even money, the puppy prodigy was the overwhelming favorite and it was no surprise to handicappers that, on paper anyway, he should be an easy winner.

A Memorable Memorial

Saturday, July 25th, marked the 5th running of the Dave Wood Memorial at Daytona Beach Kennel Club. ATASCOCITA EPAN crowded early in the first qualifier and was pinched back again in the semi-final, but drew away handily in the backstretch expanding her lead all the way to the wire. At 13/1, the second longest shot on the board, she left the field reeling in her wake.

In the final, ATASCOCITA EPAN broke slowly out of the eight hole but took control in the far turn holding on to take the win over KENTUCKY JENNA and MW'S TARRI FIN, stopping the clock in her season's best time of 30.39.

Congratulations to ATASCOCITA EPAN, the Waverider Racing Kennel, and all connections on the win!

Don't forget about one of harness racing's biggest days! The $1 million Hambletonian, to be raced today for the 90th time from the Meadowlands Racetrack, will be the first leg of the Trotting Triple Crown!
JOEY ICE, aka the "Iceman", has retired this year due to a bowed tendon. His final race was on June 6, 2015 and he is currently standing as stud on the farm of his owner, Joey Lingle. JOEY ICE has been Derby Lane's top dog, racing for  Capabal Kennel, managed by Henry Parker, trained by Belinda Parker and assisted by Gudrun Scheider.

2012 son of KIOWA SWEET TREY and QUEEN RANIA, JOEY ICE proved he was a force to be reckoned with from the moment he stepped onto the track. In 2014, he made a name for himself winning 12 consecutive wins in a row toward the beginning of the year, setting several season's best times, and claiming the 2014 Sprint Classic and Fall Sprint Champion titles at Derby Lane. It came as no surprise that he was named 2014 All-America team captain and captured the 2014 Rural Rube as the nation's top sprinter.

It has been a thrill to watch JOEY ICE compete during his impressive racing career. He did not just win a race, but he 'iced' the competition. Greyhound Channel wishes him the best and we look forward to seeing his offspring attempt to emulate their sire!
