And now a reading from the file marked “You Know You’re Getting Close to the Season Finale of American Horror Story When… ”: Going into Wednesday’s Roanoke, Matt, Agnes, Rory, Sidney and then some were dead; Audrey, Lee and Monet had been invited to be supper by the Polks; and Shelby and Dominic were caught between a shock (the real Butcher’s appearance on the front lawn) and a hard place (that damn haunted house). Which of them managed to survive “Chapter 8,” if only to die another day? Read on and find out.
ESCAPE OR DIE TRYING | As the episode began, Dominic and Shelby, reeling from The Butcher’s murder of Agnes and scared s—less that they were next, tried to escape through the tunnel under the house, only to be chased back by the Asian family that had died there. Still, Dominic wasn’t as ready to give up as Shelby was. (Maybe it was that promise of a spinoff.) Helpfully, Shelby insisted, “There’s nothing” that they could do to battle the supernatural forces at play. And, irksome as that sentiment may have been, it soon appeared that she was right. Not only did Piggy Man attack, but the nurses emerged, and a chandelier was dropped on Mrs. Miller’s ankle, Phantom of the Opera style. Holed up with Dominic in the bathroom afterward, Shelby wept that she had killed the only man she’d ever loved and then slit her own throat.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT | Meanwhile, at the Polks, Lee was learning from Mama and Jether that, during the Great Depression, the family had taken to feasting on their fellow man. When Lee protested that people don’t eat people, she was advised that the clan’s motto was, “If ya ain’t Polk, ya ain’t people.” Next thing she knew, she was missing an ear — taken as a future Christmas present. When Jether admitted to the captive that he’d been bummed he wasn’t on My Roanoke Nightmare like the rest of his kin, Lee promised to get him on Return to Roanoke if he’d help her. He could be bigger than Piggy Man, even!
Later, Jether explained to Lee that they didn’t kill her outright, they took her “sweet meats” bit by bit as per tradition, since once upon a time, keeping their food alive had been a way of keeping it fresh. Before Mama took a part of Lee’s shoulder, Jether offered her drugs to dull the pain, and her number about to be up, anyway, the addict accepted them. By and by, she asked to speak with Flora one last time, so Jether filmed her confessing to murdering Mason. “I just want you to go on,” she told her daughter, “without the weight of lies and doubt.” When Lee learned that she was to be Jether’s first kill, she managed to get him randy enough to release her — thus allowing her to (as far as I could tell) kill him.
ART INFURIATES LIFE | Elsewhere at the Polks, Audrey and Monet explained to some of Jether’s charming relatives that they were just actors, the real Matt and Shelby had taken away their feral boys, not them. Nonetheless, the hillbillies were intent on pulling Monet’s teeth. Thankfully, she managed to escape — but left Audrey behind. As the fellas went after Monet, Mama began pulling Audrey’s teeth. Before the Brit was all gums, Lee knocked out Mama and released Audrey, who put a bloody end to the Polk matriarch. Upon making her way back to the Millers’ former house with Audrey, Lee was horrified to discover Matt’s remains. In turn, Audrey was horrified to discover Shelby’s remains. “I feel like part of me has died with her!” cried Audrey, making it about herself.
Though Dominic told the women that Shelby had murdered Matt, then offed herself, they didn’t believe him, and locked him out of the suite to be done in by the Piggy Man. The morning after, Lee informed Audrey that they had to go back to the Polk farm to get rid of the video of them killing Mama Polk. (Of course, what she really needed was to destroy her confession to Mason’s murder.) Leaving the house, they came face to face with what at first they thought was the Piggy Man. “Dylan?” asked Audrey. And that was that.
So, what did you think of “Chapter 8”? Bets on the last character standing? Hit the comments.
Who do we think will be the last one standing? Sarah Paulson is Murphy’s golden girl right now but I kinda feel like Lee’s confession to Mason’s murder might have solidified her as the final girl.
I think it will be Lee also.
I third that. Perhaps we’ll see Lana Winters iinterviewing Lee in prison.
oh my god, that would be a cool way to bring in Lana. smart thinking!
Am I a bad person to be sad that Finn’s character got killed (at least it looks that way)? I mean, he’s a cannibal, but he still made me feel for him.
.
Arguably, even though Audrey really isn’t that great of a person, she’s probably the best of the final characters still alive. Honestly, though, I keep thinking they’re making Lee out to be the final girl, but Adina Porter is only guest-starring (I don’t know why since I believe she’s been in every single episode, but)…
.
I am pretty sure that Monet will bite it at some point though.
As soon as I heard her confession, I thought it will be Lee too. This episode was intense and my palms are still sweating. IMO this has turned out to be a great season!
Also @Charlie Mason, Audrey said “Dylan” at the end, not “Gillian”.
And it wasn’t Pig Man, it was Wes Bentley’s actor character who appeared in My Roanoke Nightmare as the Butcher’s son Ambrose, wearing a prosthetic pig head.
I don’t know why this is in response to me.
Actually I think she said Gideon, not Dylan.
Duly corrected. That damn accent! ;)
Props to Adina Porter for her strong portrayal of one of the most interesting characters this season. Why she is labeled a guest actor while other “regulars” have appeared in only one or two episodes is beyond me.
I love this season and especially Adina Porter. Maybe she’ll become one of Ryan’s regulars after this.
Audrey actually said”Dylan?” Guessing he’s the actor who played Piggy Man in the reenactment.
Its Wes Bentley. He was Ambrose in the reenactment. I’m guessing he dressed up as Piggy Man at this point to scare the people in the house that I’m guessing he assumes are all still alive.
Sidney probably hired him to come and scare them before he died obviously
Garbage
“Dylan” not “Gillian”
Absolute Garbage
If you hate it so much why are you wasting your time commenting here?
Because I want to like it, damn it I’m trying my hardest to like it… I love the whole series so much & never thought I’d hate a season as much as Freak Show til now. @ least in FS I got to “connect” to certain characters, this one nope. I guess cus I don’t like shows like “A Haunting” or “Paranormal Witness” just really do not like this season.
Then stop tormenting yourself by watching it and boring everybody else by repeating over and over how much you hate it.
Am I the only one that thinks this season stinks? I find myself surfing the web while it’s on. This is first season that has happened.
I’m soo bored with this season AHS,
not many people left and I don’t care if anyone survives maybe it’s all a dream like old tv show Dallas
It turned from a kind of interesting blood moon = death in the house and the grounds to a complete murder of anything and everything – blood, guts and gore. Forcing myself to watch to the end, but the 2nd half is just boring and gruesome. Not loving it.
No you do not stand alone in thinking there is something smelling about this season! I just don’t get it, Lady Gaga who was fantastic last season is barely seen this season. The story for me at least feels like Ryan Murphy loved his American crime show so much he wished to emulate it at AHS instead of thinking up something original. I am not scared and find the cheep gratitus scenes a bore. TWD knows how to bash in a head, American horror meh ! So no I am bored,so much so I watched baseball and I am not a fan!
The reason Gaga didn’t have as much screen time this season is because she was working on her new album. It was her choice.
I get that,it’s a shame though, she adds that special something that may have turned this season from a snore fest to what we know to be a great show. I have watched every season and they have all been amazing but something has definitely happened this year. I am convinced that Murphy put his focus into the crime drama and left the writing to everyone else. The flavor is off, the look is quirky and as a Brit myself there is something way off with Paulsons accent! I love her and she has amazing range but come on! The strange character that Sarah Paulson plays would have been fine without the ridiculous British accent! My parents come from two different areas of England,(I lost mine because I was so young when we came to the US) and take it from me her accent is not even close to being authentic nor acceptable from the Emmy winning actress! Bottom line I give! For me this season is a wash. I hope next season brings back the darkness minus the gratitus violence that was poorly executed. Best to Gaga on her album! Seems she is the only one with legitimate monsters!
Definitely my least favorite season yet. Feels more like it’s Ryan Murphy just patting himself on the back for previous seasons less like homage. I’m glad this season is shorter than the others. The laziest season story wise IMO
Couldn’t possibly disagree more. This is by far the tightest storytelling the show has ever done and it has kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This show very rarely has me feeling tense and afraid, but this season has been true horror and I love it.
Yes, this season actually feels like it has a consistent story that was thought out in advance. I’ve like’d previous seasons, but they usually get increasingly random and disorganized. This season, despite its shift in episode 6, has remained more focused and feels like it has actual forward momentum.
I agree. I haven’t enjoyed a season this much since Murder House. They’ve progressively gone downhill after that until now. IMO. I’m not a reality show fan and I don’t watch them at all, so for me this is a refreshing take on the haunted house idea.
This is my favorite season so far.
She said “Gideon” at the end when he took the piggy mask off.
I’m pretty sure its Dylan with an accent. I thought Gillian at first but went back and listened.
The closed captions said Dylan.
Sarah Paulson almost always survives (What is it 4/5 seasons so far??)
All of them I think, except Hotel, where she was dead to begin with
I didn’t get the explanation behind how the Piggy Man came to be. Can someone explain that to me?
Overall, the episode was okay, but not one of the season’s best. I think I caught a glimpse of Taissa Farmiga’s character in the promo. She was one of those kids in the woods I think?
@ abz – If I remember correctly, the character in the show had defied The Butcher. So, she started a blood ritual, had the pig head put on him, and then roasted him over the fire.
Anyway, I really liked Lee in this episode and I hope she survives. I’m so sick of Sarah Paulson lately. It’s time to let other actors on this show shine for once.
All she does is whine. Annoying!!
I don’t think Lee killed Jether.
I think Monet might survive. If it was Lee she probably would’ve found a way to stop us from seeing her confession and with Lana Winters coming back I feel like Audrey isn’t gonna last much longer.
to Jake:
If Lee survives, the authorities will have looked at the videos and her confession. She will spend the rest of her life in prison. This would be typical of AHS.
Who put the hidden cameras in the Polk’s house? Not the phones or the hand-held but the aerial shots and long shots.
I am guessing the production crew. They said the Polk’s haven’t been seen in awhile so they must have put cameras in there before they showed back up.
Thanks, its been bugging me (but not as much as Sarah Paulson’s accent)
I think they probably put the cameras up themselves as surveillance to protect their grow operation. If all the polks are killed, there’s no reason they couldn’t get their cameras too.
Cricket isn’t dead. The actor playing Cricket was “killed” in the TV reenactment, but we haven’t seen the “real” version of Cricket. So you might want to double-check that.
I think the real version of Cricket died during the Millers’ original stay in the house, which would be why the actor playing him was “killed” during the series, right? (RealCricket died before Matt and Shelby’s eyes, which is why Dominic and Audrey played the scene where they watched him die… theoretically.) Otherwise, they’d probably have brought the real Cricket onto Return to Roanoke.
With their progressive approaches and overwhelming success,
digital advertising strategies compel extra enterprise to shift from
traditional strategies to new media just like the Internet.
What’s going on in next weeks promos though? Who is that talking to the detective in the trailer and the guys with go pros strapped to their helmets?
Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of AHS and Ryan Murphy. But I have to say that this has been my least favorite season. While it is not necessarily more bloody than other seasons, I definitely find it more gruesome. And last night’s episode was the most gruesome so far. In the other seasons, I was able to find something to like about each character, but not this season. Actually I just want this season to end so we can get on with what I hope will be a much better show next year. Sorry, but that’s just how I feel…
This season has been a wild ride and overall to me the best one since murder house and Asylum. The only thing is that it has turned into a bit of Hostel esque show with torture scenes that dont do it justice. And how come the polks dont conflict with the ghosts?
I find this season to be the most hilarious of them all. Sarah Paulson’s character steals every scene with lines like “I had so many performances to give” right before she’s about to die no less. I screamed (with laughter) throughout the episode. Great work, my 2nd favorite season after “Coven”. I have to move “Hotel” to 3rd place..
Hotel, Coven, Asylum, Murder House are my faves in that order. However, it is a toss-up as to which is the worst one of all time so far – Freak Show or this one, Roanoke! For some reason, can’t really get into Roanoke. Seemed to drag out too much at the beginning, and story seems very fractured (pardon the pun) to me. As for Sarah’s British accent, leave the woman alone, there is nothing wrong with her accent whatsoever! Lived in England all my life – mores the pity :( and I hear more people trying to posh themselves up and they sound totally ridiculous. For those who think no one sounds this way; You wanna bet??????
